Busted
The annual initiation of members into the Millionaire’s Club, also known as the NFL draft, is this weekend. The draft is part science but mostly art with loads of GM’s not really being able to tell the difference between a Monet and a velvet Elvis. To help GM’s and fans out a bit, we thought we’d pull together the top 20 draft busts according to SI.com and ESPN.com. Part informational and part a thinly-veiled attempt at bagging on some college teams, you might find the tables below helpful.
The two lists differ on who’s the worst bust of the modern era- SI has Brian Bosworth; ESPN has Ryan Leaf. You can make a case for either but we think Ryan Leaf deserves the spot. The Boz at least contributed positively to the Seahawks before the should injury that put him down. All Ryan Leaf contributed was a great locker room sound byte.
The problem with ESPN’s list is that they go back a little further than the under-40 crowd can handle. Players like Johnny Lam Jones or Joe Profit aren’t exactly household names anymore. We’ll also point out that there are three college teams on the SI list with two players each- Houston, Notre Dame, and Nebraska. There’s also one university that has the privilege of having three players show up- Penn State (all Running Backs).
Since the first three schools no longer have football programs, that makes Penn State’s appearance that much more significant. ….Hold on (what’s that? Uh huh. Uh huh. Right. Ok, thanks). Apparently, Houston has a football program- my apologies.
Here’s hoping your favorite player doesn’t end up on this list a few years from now.
You’re welcome.
