The SI College Football Tour Guy is back for another season of tailgating hilarity. They haven’t posted last week’s video on Youtube yet so until they do, here are the highlights from season 2.
This is a risky exercise given there’s only one game to reference, but here are the ten worst teams statistically speaking on offense and defense.
The Ten Worst Offenses in America
The Ten Worst Defenses in America
There are certainly a couple of teams that jumped out to me. In the wake of their game against USC, Virginia shows up on both lists ranking fifth worst on offense and third worst on defense. The Trojans will do that to you, and unfortunately Virginia doesn’t have any other games to average that horrific performance out.
Folks in Ann Arbor probably expected some growing pains this year, but even Wolverine-haters have to be a little surprised for the Wolverines to show up as the 8th worst offense in America. Utah had the 46th best defense last year but are rebuilding their secondary and should not have, under any circumstances, dominated U of M the way they did. We’ll continue to watch this space over the course of the season but clearly RichRod has as a great a rebuilding effort as many had speculated.
Another surprise on the list has to be Louisville with the 10th worst offense. Louisville’s once prolific offense is no more and clearly there are big problems in big L (Louisville). With several key losses (Brohm, Urutia, Douglas), there were definitely questions to start the season. But surely there was enough leftover to keep the offense respectable. Half the yards they averaged last year and no touchdowns is a big, big problem. Five turnovers certainly didn’t help the cause, but with a 6-6 year last year, add Steve Kragthorpe to the list of “hot seat” coaches.
