Do what makes you feel good

Checking in on the questions I posed on Friday- much more weekend coverage to follow.
1.) I questioned whether Michigan would start the year 0-2. They avoided that with a 16-6 win over Miami University, but had the look of a team that still has a long way to go. The next three games should keep U of M fans on the edge of their seat with a road game at Notre Dame and then home games with Illinois and Wisconsin. Consider it divine intervention if they win 2 of those 3.
2.) I predicted Central Michigan would cover the spread (24) against Georgia. Missed on that one. CMU did cover the spread through three quarters but Georgia tacked on 14 more points in the 4th quarter for good measure. Next up for Georgia is a road game at South Carolina, a game that would have carried a lot more weight had South Carolina not lost to Vanderbilt on Thursday. After South Carolina, Georgia is on the road again at Arizona State which should provide the first real test for the Bulldogs.
3.) I suggested Notre Dame would vault into the top 25 after they defeated San Diego State. Notre Dame won, but by 8 not by the 21-point spread. If you watched the game like I did, you know how bad things are in South Bend. Despite successive top ten recruiting classes, you know your program is down when an 8-point win over a middle of the pack MWC team in comeback fashion gets the fan base excited. Special mention to NBC Notre Dame play-by-play man Tom Hammond who on several occasions stated that an SDSU win over Notre Dame would put the Aztecs “on the map”. Sure thing Tom- just like the 9 teams that beat Notre Dame last year were put on the map as a result of their victories. Nothing like your own TV deal to ensure homer announcers. Nice. The Domers aren’t in the top 25 this week but they did get 3 votes in the USA Today poll. Absolutely staggering.
4.) I asked if the Wannstache could bring the Pitt Panthers’ record to 1-1 following last week’s loss. The stache came through with a 27-16 over Buffalo. I have a feeling Panther fans need to get used to going 1-1 over two game stretches, I submit to you that’s how the rest of their season will go. Here’s the rest of their schedule in two game increments: home with Iowa and @ Syracuse; @ South Florida and @ Navy; home with Rutgers and @ Notre Dame; home with Louisville and @ Cincinnati; home with West Virginia and @ Uconn. Pitt Panther football- feel the excitement!!!
5.) I questioned whether the ACC could rebound after a dreadful opening weekend. Answer: sort of. The conference went 6-3 (plus Georgia Tech over Boston College) but the three losses were more big thuds- Northwestern over Duke (24-20), Middle Tennessee over Maryland (24-14), and the big one- Florida over Miami (26-3).
6.) I wrote Cincinnati would cover the spread (22 points) against Oklahoma. They did not- Oklahoma 52, Cincinnati 26. That’s the last time (maybe) this season that I’ll question the Sooners.
