The Humans are Dead, and the BCS did it

November 30th, 2008 by Red Renee

BCS

In a system as systematically flawed as the BCS, a fair outcome isn’t possible, but the computers finally put a bullet into Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns. It wasn’t unassisted, as the coaches’ poll had Oklahoma ahead of Texas also; that in combination with the margin in the computers put the Sooners into Big XII Championship game and, assuming they beat Missouri, into the National Championship. Texas…..not so much.

Perhaps Mack Brown shouldn’t have shelved the starters with 12:22 left in the 4th quarter up 42-3 on Texas A&M. Maybe 60+ on the helpless Aggies would have improved the coaches’ opinions of Texas. Instead, despite Texas beating Oklahoma head-to-head on a neutral field by 10 points, the computers, enough Harris voters, and coaches felt compelled or mathematically driven to put the Sooners ahead.

The implications reach further than just the Big XII title game. It’s a foregone conclusion that the national championship game will feature the Big XII champ and the SEC champ. So by exclusion in the Big XII title game, Texas is likely out of the national title picture as well, despite beating both teams that are playing in the Big XII championship game.

Regarding the rest of the BCS, wouldn’t it be poetic if, upon beating Alabama, Florida still wasn’t able to jump Texas in the BCS. Right now Florida stands 4th in the BCS, and a pretty healthy margin behind #3 Texas. They’re a consensus 4th in both human polls and 6th in the computers. It’s expected that should they be 1st in both human polls and perhaps 4th or 5th in the computers, Florida would be #2.

Assuming Florida does beat Alabama and Oklahoma beats Missouri Saturday, here’s the mess we’ll be left with: Florida, Alabama, Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Penn State and USC all with one loss. Plus Utah, Boise State and Ball State sitting as undefeated mid-majors. If plucking two teams out of that quagmire helps you sleep at night- good for you. But a whole bunch of teams are getting screwed next Sunday when the bowl pairings are officially announced.

Here’s a video that’s comically appropriate for the mess we’re forced to be in thanks to the money-driven university Presidents:

You’re welcome.

Happy Birthday to Us

November 30th, 2008 by Red Renee

birthday-cake.jpg

Today is our two-year anniversary for the site. It’s still not a profit-making venture, but we’re eternal optimists and have plenty left to vent so don’t expect us to close up shop anytime soon. In honor of two years of toil and trouble, here’s the very first post we put up on November 29, 2006.

Scour the country… someone has stolen the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In its place on Thanksgiving morning was an insufferable combination of bad lip-syncing, uncomfortable emceeing, and an endless parade of interviews with NBC “stars” promoting their “hit” shows. This whorification exhibited by NBC is inexcusable. What’s on tap for next year, splitting the screen into quarters and running “Law & Order: Thanksgiving” on three sides?

Also mixed in was a 45-minute commercial for Broadway, which by itself, I’m fine with. Culture (the noun) in this country is nearly bankrupt. But putting the Tony Awards in a Thanksgiving costume and passing it off to the general public is not acceptable.

I think I saw a few floats. Maybe a marching band or two and some cheerleaders, but not sure. As soon as the clock hit 15 seconds on a band, the cameras zoomed off to other things while Matt & Meredith threw down some schticky banter. At least Santa was still invited, but they managed to roll credits over top of him. Ho, ho, ho.

And worst of all, while gathered around the tv with my young children, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a tv ad for “Save Darfur.org” which mentioned burning bodies, rape, and genocide. Pass the rolls please. I appreciate calls for social responsibility and activism, but warn me so I can cover my children’s eyes and ears. I don’t know if NBC fully embraced this ad or if it was some sort of guerrilla advertising that snuck on; either way it was and is completely unacceptable. There are better ways to educate America than to shock and frighten children watching an innocent (albeit nearly unwatchable) parade.

If anyone happens to find the real Macy’s parade, call NBC immediately. I’ve got some leftover turkey I’ll offer up as a reward.

Ten (seven) Questions I Can’t Wait to be Answered this Weekend

November 29th, 2008 by Red Renee

How would you like to be a Texas Longhorn fan today? You need Oklahoma to beat Oklahoma State because if OU loses, Texas Tech takes the Big XII South tiebreaker over Texas. But, if Oklahoma wins too big, than OU will certainly leapfrog Texas in the BCS, which would be the tiebreaker for the three-way tie that would result. Confused? You can thank the presidents of our fine universities for that.

Here’s the weather forecast:

1.) Will Georgia Tech have enough surprises with the triple option to upset Georgia? Georgia Tech is coming off a loss to North Carolina and has wins over two I-AA on their resume. Still, it will be interesting to see Coach Paul Johnson making his Tech debut in the rivalry game. And if you’re a Buckeye- it will be a good opportunity to scout your potential bowl opponent. I like Georgia to win.

2.) Can Auburn scrape together enough points to stay close with Alabama? Don’t count on the offense to do it. Auburn has been one of the biggest disappointments of the 2008 season and they’re going to need turnovers, short fields, and points from the defense to stay close. Don’t expect it to happen though- I like ‘Bama big at home.

3.) Can Florida State re-ignite former glory to beat their rival? If they’re going to, they’ll need an inspired performance from the defense. FSU has shown glimpses this year of the kind of dominating defense they used to have, and there have also been sparks on offense. They’re getting quality yards on the ground from running backs Antone Smith and Jermaine Thomas. The key will be a mistake-free game from QB Christian Ponder. In Florida State’s three losses, Ponder has thrown seven interceptions, vs. only six the other eight games.

Because this game is in Tallahassee, I like Florida State to cover (15.5) but lose to the unstoppable force that is the Gators right now.

4.) Will Baylor take advantage of the beaten ego that is Texas Tech? Not bloody likely. Mike Leach doesn’t seem to be the mopey type of coach that loses rebound games. Baylor is decent but I like Texas Tech to rebound nicely.

5.) Will Oregon State clinch the Rose Bowl berth with a win at home over Oregon tonight? The Buckeyes are pulling for Oregon big- a win by the Ducks gets Ohio State into the BCS. I like Oregon to win because of a quality rushing attack and no Jacquizz Rogers for Oregon State. Plus two Pac-Ten teams in the BCS sounds filthy.

6.) Will Oklahoma clinch their spot in the Big XII title game vs. Oklahoma State? Oklahoma was very emotional in dominating Texas Tech at home last week. They’re going to be challenged to be up emotionally once again on the road against a very good Okie State team. The Cowboys are the forgotten team in the Big XII South this year, and will be looking to finish their regular season off on a high note. It’s awfully hard to pick against Oklahoma after watching them last week, but I’m hopeful Oklahoma State can keep it close.

7.)
Will Notre Dame cover the 29 point spread against USC? Not win, just cover the spread. They’ll only cover the spread if they can hold USC to 28, because I don’t think they’re going to score on USC. I like USC big, like 40+ big.

You’re welcome.

Walk and Chew Gum at the Same Time

November 26th, 2008 by Red Renee

Even if you’re not a fan of “The Amazing Race”, you have to appreciate the degree to which this dude is uncoordinated. I don’t understand how any human being can possibly be this uncoordinated. You’d think just through random mathematical principles that this dude would hit a couple of these moves (nope).

Enjoy!

McGuffie!

November 26th, 2008 by Red Renee

Rubbing a little salt in the wound, here’s a funny viral video of Michigan Running Back Sam McGuffie. Good to see America’s youth making productive use of their free-time. The viral is the third vid; first is McGuffie getting throttled in the OSU-Michigan game, second is the legendary high school hurdling clip.

Enjoy!

The Ocho

November 26th, 2008 by Red Renee

The Ocho

Oklahoma and Texas Tech moving in different directions this week. No controversy here- if the season were to end today, this would be the first round Ocho match ups:

#8 Utah @ #1 Florida
#7 Penn State @ #2 Oklahoma
#6 Texas Tech @ #3 Texas
#5 Alabama @ #4 USC

That’s our idea of a perfect regular season and post-season. The non-BCS participant having to play in the Swamp for the right to move on. Penn State having to go to Norman to defend the Big Ten’s Honor (what’s left of it). A re-match with Tech and UT, this time in Austin. ‘Bama having to play USC at home.

What do you know- no worries about which Big XII team gets in- they’re all there. No silliness with an ACC or Big East participant. And a true champion declared at the end of it all.

You’re welcome.

Orange-rolled

November 25th, 2008 by Red Renee

At least the Notre Dame band has a sense of humor. During halftime of the game where “resurgent” Notre Dame lost to a 2-8 Syracuse with a recently fired coach at the helm, the Notre Dame band decided to Rickroll the Irish faithful. The video quality isn’t great and the ND band plays with so little euro-funk that they make Rick Astley look like Kanye West, but here you go:

Slightly reminiscent of the 2006 Ohio State performance of “Titanic” at halftime of the Michigan game, before getting torpedoed by Florida in the national championship game.

You’re welcome.

College Football Questions and Answers: Week 13

November 24th, 2008 by Red Renee

1.) I finally hit on my “Texas Tech is going down” mantra. Missed on the final margin though- I picked OU by a couple. What I really meant was OU by almost four dozen. The Sooners got loads of pressure on Graham Harrell sacking him three times, hurrying him all game, and shutting down yards after the catch.

The real difference in the game was running the football. Oklahoma was able to get a stunning 299 yards running on the ground while Texas Tech could manage only 45. Scarier still was OU’s balance on offense- 299 on the ground, 326 through the air.

If OU can beat Oklahoma State in Stillwater, they’ll likely jump Texas claiming the Big XII tiebreaker (to get into the Big XII Championship game) and then punch their ticket to Miami.

2.) The Ohio State-Michigan game was even more lopsided than I thought it would be. I remember well the dominance of Michigan in the 90’s and that dominance has come completely full circle with Ohio State now winning five in a row. Even assuming Michigan can find a freshman quarterback that can step in right away next year, they’ve got loads of holes to fill, including replacing most of the defense.

3.) I went conservative on picking Penn State by a few. Two turnovers for Michigan State and a career day for Daryll Clark led the way for a 49-18 Penn State victory. Now it’s a tough spot for the Nittany Lions- either a re-match with Oregon State or a date with USC, neither of which sound very appetizing.

4.) Utah finished up another undefeated season with a win over rival BYU. The Utes now will head to a BCS bowl, likely the Sugar Bowl, and probably against Alabama.

5.) Oregon State got a strong performance from Quarterback Sean Canfield in a win over Arizona. I thought Arizona could pull off the win, but their lack of a decent QB (aka Willie Tuitama) struck again. Even without Jacquizz (left early with an injury), OSU got just enough productivity and then got some crucial plays at the end of the 4th quarter that led to the game-winning field goal.

The Beavers are one win away from clinching the Pac-10 title and a trip to the Rose Bowl to play Penn State. That win will put Ohio State out of the BCS so put on your day-glo green clothes- we’re Oregon Duck fans this week.

You’re welcome.

Super-Hot Three-Way

November 23rd, 2008 by Red Renee

Three-way

If you think you know which two teams are the best in the Big XII South, let alone the country, you’re a liar. With Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech, there are now three teams in the south that are 10-1 and 6-1 in conference. See if you can make sense out of this:

October 11:
Texas beats Oklahoma at a neutral site by 10
October 24: Texas beats Oklahoma State by 4 in Austin
November 1: Texas Tech beats Texas by 6 in Lubbock
November 8: Texas Tech beats Oklahoma State by 36 in Lubbock
November 22: Oklahoma beats Texas Tech by 44 in Norman
November 29: Oklahoma will play Oklahoma State in Stillwater

And that’s all just in the freaking Big XII South. If you put a gun to my head and said “pick the best two teams in the South”, I’d change my shorts and say “Texas and Oklahoma”.

If you forced me to pick the best team in the Big XII South, I’d say “do you mean best team right now, or best body of work? Shall I consider all 2008 historical implications and data available or shall I use the oft ‘who’s hottest right now’ because that would lead to two different conclusions, and since Texas didn’t play this weekend, they can’t possibly be that hot, I mean they were chilling in their dorm rooms watching a team they beat destroy a team they lost to….

I hate the BCS. Down with the BCS and the politically corrupt University Presidents who force it down our throats.

One thing for sure is that one of these three teams isn’t going to go BCS bowling. Now, the stated mission of the BCS isn’t to get the best teams to play each other in bowl games, but even with full acknowledgment of that, it doesn’t feel right that one of these guys will be replaced by Cincinnati or Virginia Tech.

And that only scratches the surface. Between Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Florida, USC, Alabama, Penn State, and a non-BCS flavor of the year, would you bet with complete certainty your entire government bailout check on one of them to win a tournament? I would- it’s free money anyways, but still, would be a hard exercise.

Dear Mr. President Elect,

We need a playoff and we need it now. Screw Detroit, screw the banks, screw each one of George Bush’s mistakes that you’re going to have to fix. Fix college football- it will immediately improve “consumer outlook”. Plus, it’s a rescue package of its’ own. Fans traveling to more bowl games, Universities “re-distributing” more wealth to themselves via the networks. It’s win, win. Do it. Now.

Regards,

Ten (five) Questions I Can’t Wait to be Answered this Weekend

November 22nd, 2008 by Red Renee

Another relatively light Saturday, with only three games involving two ranked teams. With the luster a little off Ohio State -v- Michigan, the weekend feels even lighter.

Here’s the weather forecast:

1.) Will Texas Tech continue their winning on the road? Texas Tech has played only four road games all season, and only one of those against a ranked team (Kansas ranked 23 at the time). TT is in Norman this evening to take on #5 Oklahoma.

Oklahoma boasts a slightly better offense than Tech but also a slightly worse defense. Points will come in bushels tonight so it’s safe to say whichever defense can make a stop in the second half will probably win the game. It will be interesting to see if Oklahoma can get pressure on TT QB Graham Harrell- no one has yet this season. Oklahoma comes in with 34 sacks so they at least have the potential to disrupt the Red Raider offense.

I still maintain the only way to slow down Texas Tech is to hit them hard, and sometimes a little late. You’ve got to disrupt the timing and make Graham Harrell and those receivers start to hear footsteps.

I’ve been mistakenly calling for Texas Tech to lose at several points this season. They’ve proved me wrong on several occasions. Well, call me stubborn, but I’m calling for them to lose this week. I like Oklahoma by a couple. Incidentally, if it comes down to field goals, they both have struggled this season with that (OU- 50%, TT- 53%).

2.) Will Michigan turn around their season with a win at Ohio State? Nope. I previewed this one last night. I like Ohio State by 10+.

3.) Will Michigan State pull off the upset at Penn State? I’d like to pick Michigan State here, but with PSU’s loss to Iowa, they’re going to be focused on the win. The game’s in Happy Valley and it’s probably JoePa’s last regular season game as Head Coach. I like the Nits by a few.

4.) Will Utah keep their BCS hopes alive against #14 BYU? They will. BYU will be a tough test, but I’ve had Utah as the non-BCS BCS participant all season and I’m sticking to it. I like the Utah defense to get it done in a very close game.

5.) Will Oregon State keep their Pac-10 championship hopes alive? Win @ Arizona tonight then against Oregon next week in the Civil War and the Beavers are Pac-10 champs. If you’re a Buckeye, you want OSU (the other one) to go down tonight. If Oregon State wins the Pac-10, that puts two Pac-10 teams into the BCS and likely leaves Ohio State out. That’s not the kind of BCS chaos I’m hoping for.

Arizona is coming off a loss to Oregon, but their four losses have been decided by an average of 6 1/2 points. U of A’s 59th ranked rush D is going to have to play lights out in order to avoid getting Jacquizzed. I like Arizona to win at home (not totally an upset- Arizona is favored by 3).

You’re welcome

THE Game

November 21st, 2008 by Red Renee

Ohio Stadium

Saturday marks the 105th meeting between Ohio State and Michigan- the greatest rivalry in all of sports. History’s a funny thing. Eight years ago, the John Cooper era ended after an 0 & forever record vs. U of M.

Today, Jim Tressel stands at 6-1 vs. Michigan with a good shot at 7-1. And the OSU Alumni are dropping some hard core smack toward the Wolverines. Spielman was quoted as saying “They stink, they’re not very good. They don’t play offense… they can’t run it consistently, they can’t throw it consistently, they can’t stop the run, they’re not very good defending the pass, they’re not very good covering kicks, they’re not very good returning kicks.” That was said on Columbus radio, but the transmission still made it to Ann Arbor.

Ohio State has the opportunity to beat Michigan five years in a row for the first time in their history. They also have the ability to win at least a share of the Big Ten title for a fourth year in a row.

What a difference two years can make. This time in 2006, Michigan was coming into Ohio Stadium undefeated and ranked # 2. Ohio State was undefeated and ranked # 1. It was “the game of the century”. A 42-39 Ohio State slugfest victory. And yet a mere 24 months later….not so much

Rich Rodriguez is finishing his first year at the Michigan helm with a 3-8 record. The phrase “worst year in the history of Michigan” isn’t totally fair since college football didn’t have 12-game schedules back in the 40’s and 50’s. Still, the prospects of rubbing shoulders with Harry Kipke who went 1-7 in 1936 and Bump Elliott who went 2-7 in 1962 don’t look good. The good news for RichRod is that Kipke went 4-4 the following year and Bump Elliott went 3-4-2 in 1963. So maybe next year- .500! Keep your fingers crossed.

I digress in deference to the rivalry.

The question on all Buckeyes’ minds is:

What it will take for Michigan to win the game?
There’s no way to sugar coat it- Michigan is a bad, bad football team this year. It’s not all RichRod’s fault- Lloyd Carr left the cupboard bare. Really bare. Especially on offense. Young offensive line, no quarterback, no running game, and few playmaking from the wide receivers. That’s the recipe for 3-8. The defense is a slightly different story though.

Michigan’s three wins came at the hands of Miami University, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. In those three wins Michigan had a +0 turnover margin. In their eight losses, Michigan had a -9 turnover margin. That is the first thing Michigan must have in order to win the game- even or better in turnovers.

To put a finer point on it, they need to keep game out of the hands of their quarterbacks. Steven Threet is questionable with a shoulder injury and he’s the better of two very average QB’s. Nick Sheridan looks to take it the entire way Saturday and that spells trouble. On the season Sheridan has a 49% completion percentage and has thrown two touchdowns against five interceptions. He’s coming off an 8-29 performance for 61 yards two weeks ago.

Sheridan needs to look for open receivers and not take any chances. The Ohio State secondary is very good and very fast and will take advantage of any errant throws. In fact, Ohio State ranks 7th nationally in turnover margin, which is an element that was missing from the dominant team last season, and has been responsible for at least two wins this season.

Despite RichRod’s tendencies (aka man-crush on Sam McGuffie), the Wolverines will need Brandon Minor to run well. RRod has a soft spot for Sam McGuffie so he’ll probably get the bulk of the carries, but Brandon Minor is the type of Big Ten back that can control games (6-1, 215 pounds). Getting productivity on the ground is the second thing the Wolverines must do to win. Anything positive they get in the passing game is a bonus, but will need solid production from their line and RB’s.

Unfortunately for Michigan, Ohio State comes in as the 26th best rush defense in the country. Save for a few mental errors and gap problems, they don’t miss tackles and they don’t give up big runs. The Buckeyes are coming off their worst rush D performance of the season, giving up 214 to Illinois two weeks ago. Michigan will have to find a way to get yards on the ground- and lots of them.

Crazy. The third thing the Wolverines must do to win is mix in a little crazy. Fake punts, fake field goals, 4th down is the new 3rd down, hook -n- ladder, flea flicker. You name it, Michigan needs to do it. The only place on the field where Michigan might have an advantage is their D-Line vs. the squishy soft Ohio State O-Line. That plus special teams is probably a draw. Otherwise, the Wolverines are at a distinct disadvantage at every other position, and for good measure, the game’s in Columbus. And oh yeah, Tressel always saves something for Michigan so there will be some surprises there.

Football’s a crazy thing- and sometimes teams that have no business winning do. Exactly 41 years ago to the day- November 22, 1969, first year Head Coach Bo Schembechler brought a scrappy 7-2 team into Ohio Stadium. The previous year, Ohio State beat Michigan 50-14 and won the National Championship. Ohio State came into the November 1969 meeting undefeated with a 22-game winning streak. Bo pulled off the improbable upset of Ohio State that Saturday in a 24-12 game that featured six Ohio State turnovers.

Unfortunately this Michigan team doesn’t look to be the sort of history-writing unit, but make no mistake about it- this is Michigan’s bowl game and a Michigan win will salvage the entire season. I like Ohio State to win- not by the 20.5 spread but by at least 10, which counts as a Tressel blowout. And with any luck, Ohio State will use that momentum plus the bowl practice to turn around their recent bowl misfortunes as well.

You’re welcome.

Oh the Horror…

November 21st, 2008 by Red Renee

Making its’ way around the nets today is Sarah Palin in the ceremonial act of pardoning a Thanksgiving turkey. Unfortunately for her, her staff neglected to scope out the location of the TV interview- which took place in front of the machine where they take the turkeys’ heads off. Nice work team.

This is of course another left wing conspiracy- everybody knows turkeys come from Supermarkets, not farms. The dude (aka “the executioner”) in the background is actually North Dakota Democrat Senator Kent Conrad.
(shown here sans mustache and uni-bomber-type sweatshirt)
Kent Conrad

Conrad is yet another pawn in the Dems plan to humilify Governor Palin.

Love the question from the interviewer at the 1:49 mark about any state programs being on the chopping block. Subtle!

You’re welcome.

Op-Ed

November 21st, 2008 by Red Renee

Providing some rationality to the next “gun to our head economic moment”, here’s Mitt Romney’s Op Ed piece from the Tuesday New York Times. Below the article, I’ve also posted the top five response comments as selected by Times’ readers. Obviously most of those readers are in disagreement with Governor Romney but I thought it would provide interesting counterpoint.

If you watched any of the sessions on Congress this week on C-Span like I did, you know the whole thing is an embarrassing circus. The automotive CEO’s had a constant look of helplessness- helpless to control their businesses that are already heaving under the weight of massive government regulation and union control, and will be under further control should they get some of yours and mine tax dollars. Sprinkled in with that was the Ford CEO occasionally breaking into a Broadway show/TV commercial singing the praises of “the Ford lineup”. Tasteful.

Never mind too that folks on both sides of the hill act like they’re sitting on a giant pile of money. Every discussion involves further deficit spending putting not only our well-being at risk, but our children’s.

As for some of the comments after Romney’s piece below, several people point to socialized health care as the solution. I think socialized medicine is great in theory, but in practice in other countries it’s flawed at best. Add to that clear evidence that our government hasn’t been able to manage any large social program successfully, bankrupting or nearly bankrupting each along the way.

Also, any discussion on health care can’t be complete without discussing controls on the spiraling costs associated with health care courtesy of our good friends- the trial lawyers. Without addressing the dramatic inflationary effect attorneys have had on health care and big pharm, universal healthcare will be DOA.

I don’t support “leaving workers high and dry” either as many on the left suggest of the right. I believe limited federal funds should be made available to those workers that are displaced. However, I support this with a degree of tough love as well. If these workers are as highly-skilled as the unions and the wages would lead us to believe, they should have no trouble finding similar work in related manufacturing fields. Sure they may have to pick up their family and move, sometimes that’s what it takes. It’s better than living in a cardboard box.

Also, the big three have been struggling for several years now. The workers of those companies surely have better insight into that struggle than people on the outside, so those folks should have been preparing alternate career plans all along via additional trade training, community college, whatever.

Finally, I feel bad for the retirees whom likely can no longer earn a living and are most dependent on medical coverage. But again, those people would have made choices throughout their employment career and should they have hedged their entire retirement on pension, even as pensions have evaporated over the last decade, than that’s a risk they took on with full cognition.

Also, and I guess this makes me a cold conservative, how big is their house? How big is their boat? How many nice cars are they driving? How big is their Winnebago? How big is their summer home/hunting lodge? I’d like to know before my income gets funneled to them. I lived in Detroit for two years and the dude that lived across from me was a union autoworker. He had a giant house (a “Parade of Homes” house), a giant boat, a gorgeous red corvette, a giant SUV, and a summer home. Joe auto worker has been living very, very well.

Here’s Romney’s letter to the editor:

IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.

I love cars, American cars. I was born in Detroit, the son of an auto chief executive. In 1954, my dad, George Romney, was tapped to run American Motors when its president suddenly died. The company itself was on life support — banks were threatening to deal it a death blow. The stock collapsed. I watched Dad work to turn the company around — and years later at business school, they were still talking about it. From the lessons of that turnaround, and from my own experiences, I have several prescriptions for Detroit’s automakers.

First, their huge disadvantage in costs relative to foreign brands must be eliminated. That means new labor agreements to align pay and benefits to match those of workers at competitors like BMW, Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Furthermore, retiree benefits must be reduced so that the total burden per auto for domestic makers is not higher than that of foreign producers.

That extra burden is estimated to be more than $2,000 per car. Think what that means: Ford, for example, needs to cut $2,000 worth of features and quality out of its Taurus to compete with Toyota’s Avalon. Of course the Avalon feels like a better product — it has $2,000 more put into it. Considering this disadvantage, Detroit has done a remarkable job of designing and engineering its cars. But if this cost penalty persists, any bailout will only delay the inevitable.

Second, management as is must go. New faces should be recruited from unrelated industries — from companies widely respected for excellence in marketing, innovation, creativity and labor relations.

The new management must work with labor leaders to see that the enmity between labor and management comes to an end. This division is a holdover from the early years of the last century, when unions brought workers job security and better wages and benefits. But as Walter Reuther, the former head of the United Automobile Workers, said to my father, “Getting more and more pay for less and less work is a dead-end street.”

You don’t have to look far for industries with unions that went down that road. Companies in the 21st century cannot perpetuate the destructive labor relations of the 20th. This will mean a new direction for the U.A.W., profit sharing or stock grants to all employees and a change in Big Three management culture.

The need for collaboration will mean accepting sanity in salaries and perks. At American Motors, my dad cut his pay and that of his executive team, he bought stock in the company, and he went out to factories to talk to workers directly. Get rid of the planes, the executive dining rooms — all the symbols that breed resentment among the hundreds of thousands who will also be sacrificing to keep the companies afloat.

Investments must be made for the future. No more focus on quarterly earnings or the kind of short-term stock appreciation that means quick riches for executives with options. Manage with an eye on cash flow, balance sheets and long-term appreciation. Invest in truly competitive products and innovative technologies — especially fuel-saving designs — that may not arrive for years. Starving research and development is like eating the seed corn.

Just as important to the future of American carmakers is the sales force. When sales are down, you don’t want to lose the only people who can get them to grow. So don’t fire the best dealers, and don’t crush them with new financial or performance demands they can’t meet.

It is not wrong to ask for government help, but the automakers should come up with a win-win proposition. I believe the federal government should invest substantially more in basic research — on new energy sources, fuel-economy technology, materials science and the like — that will ultimately benefit the automotive industry, along with many others. I believe Washington should raise energy research spending to $20 billion a year, from the $4 billion that is spent today. The research could be done at universities, at research labs and even through public-private collaboration. The federal government should also rectify the imbedded tax penalties that favor foreign carmakers.

But don’t ask Washington to give shareholders and bondholders a free pass — they bet on management and they lost.

The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs. The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk.

In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.

Scomd in New York City:
The cost of health care is estimated up to $1500 per vehicle.

In no other industrialized nation does the manufacturer bear the cost of health care for it’s workers (that cost inflated because the risk, therefor the cost, is not evenly spread through society).

Without universal health care, how can our manufacturers compete with any industrialized nation??

Craig in Springfield, Missouri
That’s the best you can do? The workers must suffer for managements sins as usual. I like the way the good old capitalists always compare the workers of other countries to ours but fail to mention that they have cradle to grave security with socialized medicine, real social security at a living income, maternity leave, 36 hour work weeks and all that stuff that none of you good old republicans want anybody to have because you don’t want to pay any taxes. Gee I wonder why our companies are going bankrupt trying to do what other countries are doing for their citizens.

You don’t even want to pay taxes for your Iraq war. Oh yeah, you include the management and truth be told we do need the management because the auto business is well, the auto business so it takes an auto executive. I agree with the poor management idea and I agree that there are some lazy workers who make too much money but if you really look at what it takes to live in our world you wouldn’t be so fast to keep pushing the workers down. The rich always seem to want to blame everybody else. How about raising your capital gains taxes and making sure that there is not such a huge incentive to trade stocks. Encourage real ownership not this roulette wheel that the stock market has become.

My solution buy some cars. The government should go out and buy lots and lots of the most fuel efficient and environmentally responsible cars and trade them to people with old tired gas guzzlers and scrap ‘um. Save gas, reduce pollution, create jobs, reduce crowding on the roads and recycle the old cars. People pay state and local tax, licence and insurance. We don’t have time for what you want to do. Detroit already makes some great cars but people just can’t afford them. Sure make the companies present a plan and stick to it to be on the list to sell a car of two or 200,000. $10,000 a car what a bargain for a bailout.

ToddA in Michigan:
Romney’s advice misses the point almost completely.

Yes, the industry’s costs are too high. We need national health care, as our competitor countries have, to unburden industry from this expense that we as a nation most bear for our fellow citizens. It is an economic and a moral imperative.

Second, it beggars belief that we should beat up the industry for providing just those vehicles that Americans wanted to buy. The fault lies not in their production decisions, it lies in the cowardice of our political leaders. The countries of Europe have for years imposed high fuel taxes that have both pumped money into mass transit and pushed demand toward small fuel-efficient cars. The American manufacturers we criticize for building the cars we wanted to buy here have been building the cars Europeans wanted (small and efficient) for the European market for years. It’s time for our self-righteous leaders to raise our fuel taxes at a steady rate until the price of a gallon is no less than $10. That is achievable by the end of the second Obama term.

Mr. Romney, please go back to Massachusetts and save your self-serving advice for someone else.

djlewis in Boston:
Sorry, but railing against a “bailout” is demagoguery. Exactly who gets bailed out is crucial.

Your plan would shield customers, which is necessary, and not reward stock and bondholders, which is correct. But shedding labor contracts and pensions would severely punish the equally innocent workers and retirees. Worse, putting people out of work and drastically cutting pay and benefits for remaining workers would not only hurt them, it would have significant secondary impact on the area and national economies when we can least afford it.

A bailout should go toward restructuring the companies, bringing in new management AND at least partially protecting workers and retirees with extra benefits to make up for the income they will lose. In other words, the government should assume at least part of the cost of those contracts and pensions granted when things were rosy.

It’s fine to invoke “creative destruction” but not for (a) retirees; (b) this massive a work force. The government should be the buffer.

There’s your bailout, Mr. Romney… not that the plight of workers and retirees would ever bother your head.

Oh dear, is this too much like socialism? Hmmm… I guess it is when it’s to help people… but when it’s to help rich companies and their owners/executives, it’s something else, eh?

Parker from Oakland, Michigan
Governor Romney, this is not your father’s economy. If the economy were merely anemic and not in Stage 4, the auto companies could borrow more capital to get them through this liquidity crisis, but they can’t. In case you haven’t heard, there is a credit crisis. The federal government is the last bank standing, thanks to the job your president has done the last 8 years.

You’re welcome.

Black Friday
Two links for you tonight. The first link is a fantastic website if you’re a big “Black Friday” after-Thanksgiving shopper. Somehow these blokes have gotten ahold of bootleg advance copies of the ads from various retailers.

Second a hilarious post at holytaco.com about gym locker room etiquette- good find by Mark O.

Enjoy.

Nancy Pelosi Unveils ‘The Mother of all Stimulus Plans’

November 19th, 2008 by Red Renee

Democrat Caucus
Dateline: Washington, D.C.

Amid continued discussions on the hill for bailouts of additional U.S. corporations and various levels of taxpayer stimulus, Nancy Pelosi pushed her chips all in and unveiled what is being hailed as “the mother of all stimulus packages”.

Pelosi’s plan calls for $1 million stimulus checks to be delivered sometime in the 1st quarter to each household currently earning less than $1 million per year. “We feel it is important to proactively engage the bulk of America with proper stimuli rather than allowing each business and population group to gradually come forward for help” Pelosi said, adding “we simply don’t have time in the Senate for any more hearings”. Barney Frank added “harumph, harumph, gargle, gargle, George Bush can kiss my ass”.

With approximately 96 million households under the $1 million income mark, the pricetag for the plan is roughly $96 trillion. “A small price to pay for America’s future” said Pelosi.

When asked how the plan would be paid for, Pelosi indicated reductions on future appropriations would offset a portion, plus seizures of bank accounts held by those in the $1 million+ household category would occur “here and there”.

Economists who have studied the plan encouraged stimuli recipients to quickly exchange the funds to Canadian dollars or Yen, depending on “whomever takes us over”.

According to a White House spokesperson, George Bush was unavailable for comment because he was “packing up his knick knacks and figurines.”

The lame duck session of Congress is expected to vote on the plan Thursday or Friday.

You’re welcome.

Straight Cash Homey

Money
If you’re looking to risk some of the next economic stimulus check, this weekend may be the perfect chance to do it. Here are some of the mid-week Vegas lines for your amusement.

Ohio State
is currently a 20.5 point favorite over Michigan. I can’t recall when either team was favored double digits in the rivalry, let alone over 20. Stranger still is that Ohio State has only covered the spread 4 times this year and yet 83% of the money is going to the Buckeyes. With a sloppy track and Tressel ball in full bloom, it’s hard to believe OSU will cover, but here’s hoping they do.

How bad have things gotten at Syracuse? Not only was your coach fired but you’re a 19.5 point dog at Notre Dame. Probably going to get worse though- like losing to Notre Dame worse.

Where Vegas oddsmakers really earned their money this week was setting a line for 0-10 Washington at 1-10 Washington State. The good news for the Washington Board of Tourism is one of these teams is going to get a win. Whoopeeee!

Despite being 10-0, coming off a dominating performance of Oklahoma State, and a #2 BCS ranking, Texas Tech is still a 7 point underdog at Oklahoma. Still no respect for the Red Raiders I guess. I’m picking OU but wouldn’t risk a cent on this one. Except of course the over/under- the line is set at 76 points. My guess is this thing makes it to at least 80.

The game to decide the Big Ten (at least partially) has Penn State a 14-point favorite over visiting Michigan State. The line hasn’t budged but right now 91% of the money is going to Michigan State. Take from that what you will.

Finally, here’s an interesting link at trojanwire.com. Not surprisingly USC would be favored in any national championship match up, this according to the Wynn sportsbook. The worst game would be USC vs. Alabama, where USC is currently an 11-point favorite. The best game would be against Florida where USC is currently only a 1.5 point favorite.

You’re welcome.

College Football Questions and Answers: Week 12

November 18th, 2008 by Red Renee

It’s a good thing I’m not a betting man…

1.) I wrote that South Carolina would cover the 21-point spread against Florida. I couldn’t have been wronger about that. Any questions from anyone about the dominance of Florida right now was soundly answered. The statistics provide the evidence for the beating that South Carolina took:

Florida Offense
519 total yards
346 rushing yards
173 passing yards
46% conversion on 3rd downs

South Carolina Offense
173 total yards
53 rushing yards
120 passing yards
6% conversion on 3rd downs
-2 turnover margin

It all resulted in a 56-6 Florida victory. South Carolina couldn’t get out of its’ own way, making mistake after mistake. The game was ostensibly over toward the end of the 1st quarter. Florida had just gone up 14-0 and South Carolina tried a little trickery on the kickoff return. They fumbled the ball and Florida recovered on the 1/2 yard line, the humor of it all brilliantly pointed out on EDSBS.com.

The game also provided further proof that without quality quarterback play, you can’t compete in big games. South Carolina has gotten 17 touchdowns against 20 interceptions from their three quarterbacks this year. No matter how good your defense is, that QB ratio isn’t going to get it done.

Everything that could go wrong for SC did and everything that could go right for UF did. It was the type of perfect storm game that resulted in an unusually lopsided result, where the losing team isn’t quite as bad as the result, nor is the winning team quite as good. But Florida is very, very good, and is peaking at the perfect time. And in a karma sense, how fascinating it was to watch Spurrier struggle through the very type of beating he used to administer on a frequent basis when he was at Florida.

2.) I was only part right on Ohio State -v- Illinois. Ohio State did win as I predicted and Juice was normal Juice and not Super Juice like he was last year. Statistically speaking, Juice had his best completion percentage game of the season and his 4th best QB rating game, but too many untimely mistakes on both sides of the ball did the Illini in.

Despite not having a consistent running game this season, Illinois was able to rush for 214 yards against the 26th ranked rush D nationally. Unfortunately for Illinois, Ohio State was able to rush for 305 with Beanie doing what Beanie does and Terrelle Pryor going over 100 yards for the first time.

Unfortunately for Ohio State fans, the Buckeyes got the win despite TP only passing the ball 10 times (49 yards total). I’ll take the win but I don’t like the reinforcement of Tressel-ball principles so late in the season. That lack of production, whether pre-meditated or accidental equals a loss to a 2nd or 3rd place SEC/Big XII team in the bowl game. And another long winter in Columbus.

If you missed any of the play-by-play, here’s a fantastic game summary including “the hurdle” over at elevenwarriors.com.

3.) As I predicted, Kansas could not keep it close with Texas, losing by a final score of 35-3. Game summary over at burntorangenation.com. Kansas now stands two games behind Missouri in the Big XII North and with one game left to play, is out of the race. Texas’ path to the Big XII championship involves blowing out Texas A&M this weekend and a close win by Oklahoma over Texas Tech. That’s probably the only way they’ll remain ahead of both OU and TT in the BCS and thus get the tiebreaker in the Big XII South.

4.) Stanford could not make lightning strike twice losing to USC 45-23, though the game was tied 17-17 at the half. The USC defense was vulnerable once again to the run giving up 202 yards but the offense came through with 282 rushing yards and five total touchdowns.

5.) I predicted a close win for Alabama over Mississippi State, and it was on track for that until the MSU special teams went in the toilet. The score was 12-7 Alabama at the half and Mississippi State was hanging tough with the nation’s # 1 team. Until the 3rd quarter that is. Following MSU’s first possession of the second half punter Blake McAdams punted the ball to Javier Arena which he proceeded to run back 80 yards for a touchdown. Score 19-7 Alabama. That was the spark that Alabama needed and they controlled the rest of the game winning by a final score of 32-7.

I still don’t buy into Alabama as the # 1 team but they’re doing what they need to win all their games. And in our current flawed system, that’s all it takes to be champion.

6.) I mistakenly predicted a Troy upset over LSU, one that almost materialized. I also detailed in a previous post how the Troy collapse happened. As I wrote on Friday, Troy needed some turnovers to get the win. They finished the game -2 so clearly that didn’t happen. The turnover problem plus the 4th quarter collapse spelled doom for the little engine that couldn’t.

You’re welcome.

The Anatomy of a Collapse

November 17th, 2008 by Red Renee

Troy Trojans
I’m going all CSI Baton Rouge to break down the disaster that took place Saturday night. I’ll set the scene and then give you the details on the horror in case you missed it. 6:24 remaining in the 3rd quarter and the Troy Trojans have a 31-3 lead over mighty LSU (at LSU).

At that exact moment, the light went on for the LSU offense with Jarrett Lee going 5-8 for 47 yards and Freshman QB Jordan Jefferson rushing for his first college touchdown.

Score: 31-10 Troy

Troy gets the ball back with 1:26 left and proceeds to rip off a 1-yard run and two incomplete passes. They punt the ball and, after taking only 78 seconds off the clock, LSU gets the ball with :18 seconds to go in 3Q.

Jarrett Lee again on fire (how little those words have been uttered this year). 4 of 4 for 80 yards with a touchdown pass to Brandon LaFell.

Score: 31-17 Troy

At this point, despite only about a quarter of LSU fans remaining, the momentum had so clearly swung in favor of the Tigers, and yet Troy didn’t want to acknowledge any of that. At least they had some sense to run the fricking ball on the next drive to run some clock down. Sort of.

14:00 minute mark- Troy passes incomplete on 1st down, rushes for 9 yards on 2nd down and 0 yards on 3rd and 1. 4th & 1 from the LSU 40 and Troy decides to go for it. Gutsy attempt to swing momentum back in your favor for Coach Larry Blakeney. Try and “out LesMiles” Les Miles. Unfortunately, the universe simply can’t handle that type of quantum computation and the risk backfired. Troy went incomplete on a 4th down pass giving LSU decent field position and 12:54 left on the clock.

Score: 31-17 Troy

Jarrett Lee on fire again (still, strange to type). 4-4 for 36 yards passing, with Charles Scott and Quinn Johnson getting the rest on the ground. It’s slipping away Troy fans- can you feel it?

Score: 31-24 Troy

Next possession Troy gets a poor kick return and takes over at their own 18 with 10:33 left in the game- an eternity based on how the last ten minutes had elapsed. Time to run the ball and take some time off the clock, right? Wrong.

1st down- pass incomplete. 2nd down- pass complete for 4 yards. 3rd down- pass (of course) intercepted by LSU returned to the Troy 13 yard line. Total elapsed drive time- 62 seconds.

Fortunately, LSU returned to their first half self and their drive stalled out. Field goal attempt good.

Score: 31-27 Troy

Another poor kickoff return and Troy starts their drive at their own 16. After the previous drive, lesson learned right? Run to burn time off the clock or if you’re going to pass, make sure they’re complete. Yeahhhhh….not so much.

1st down- pass incomplete. 2nd down- pass incomplete. 3rd down- and stop me if you’ve already heard this- pass incomplete. Total elapsed time: 35 seconds. Now it’s time for second-guessing:

It’s 4th down, you’re at your own 16 yard line and you’re getting your ass beat in by the defending national champs after dominating them for almost three quarters. Do you a.) punt the ball giving LSU fantastic field position with plenty of time to score the game-winning touchdown, or do you b.) run the ball through the back of the end zone for a safety and take a kick off? Granted, the kick off only gains you about 20 yards and with so much time remaining, probably doesn’t matter.

Troy elected to punt giving the ball back to LSU at the 50 with 7:16 left to play. Seven plays later, Charles Scott goes in for a touchdown.

Score: 34-31 LSU

4:50 left to play- Troy with plenty of time left to salvage the game with a late field goal. One rush and three incomplete passes later, Troy turns the ball over on downs on their own 34. LSU scores again to put the game on ice and finish off 30 straight points for Les Miles’ crew.

When the dust settled, Troy had blown a 28-point lead and managed only four rushes during that 21 minutes or so. An egregious lack of game management by Coach Blakeney, who afterward said:

“If you do what we do, you have to do it all the time. You can’t do it for a half and then lock down with a wishbone in the second half.”

Wishbone certainly would have been extreme, but a few more rushes and LSU may have run out of time for their miraculous comeback. Instead, Troy goes home a loser and the SEC remains as dominant as ever, even if they aren’t really.
