The list of high profile Juniors (and even some low-profile juniors) declaring early for the NFL draft hit 49 by the end of the declaration period last night. I’ll take a look at the Buckeye impact first, then snoop around the rest of the country.
The obvious gap is the departure of Beanie Wells at running back. The Buckeyes only had the use of his services about 70% of the time so even Beanie wasn’t as good as Beanie could have been, but Boom Herron will need to step up big next year as the feature back. It would be a huge plus if one of the two Florida Freshmen coming in (Jamaal Berry or Carlos Hyde) stepped up, but considering the emphasis Tressel puts on running backs learning their blocking assignments, don’t count on it. I suppose it’s too much to ask for Brandon Saine to make good on some of his potential…
The secondary is also getting hit hard. The luxury Ohio State had this year (but didn’t always use) was the ability to play man coverage with lock-down corners. Malcolm Jenkins, Donald Washington, and Chimdi Chekwa made up one of the best corner trios anywhere in the country. With Jenkins using up his eligibility and Washington declaring early, it’ll be up to Chekwa to step up as well as one of the incoming freshmen (best DB class in the country right now). Fortunately, Kurt Coleman decided to come back for his Senior season so the safeties should be in good shape.
Brian Hartline will be missed, especially because Robiskie will also be gone (graduated), but Dane Sanzenbacher should be able to replace Hartline and Devier Posey showed glimpses of greatness and if he plays to potential definitely can replace Robiskie. Robiskie’s leadeship will be missed though.
Georgia and Texas Tech were hit particularly hard with several big losses. Georgia probably the worst with nearly all of their 2008 offense leaving in the form of Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno. CB Asher Allen is leaving early as well for good measure.
Not only does Texas Tech lose Graham Harrell to graduation, but they also lose the most prolific receiver in their school’s history to early departure- one Michael Crabtree. The defense returns most starters but will lose DE Brandon Williams.
The scene at South Carolina should get stranger next year after most expected Steve Spurrier to win a national championship by now, or at the very least an SEC title. Their QB situation is a disaster and there are several high profile underclassmen bolting for paydays. The Gamecocks lose CB Captain Munnerlyn, S Emmanuel Cook and TE Jared Cook.
The USC Trojans got mixed results with Safety Taylor Mays deciding to come back but QB Mark Sanchez peeling out. There will be huge losses to graduation on defense so the return of Mays can’t be underscored enough. Still, with Sanchez leaving there will be multiple pieces to fit back together come springtime in L.A..
The party at the top of the BCS standings should look eerily similar in 2009, what with Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, and Sam Bradford all returning to school.
The Sam Bradford decision was particularly intriguing to me what with every starting offensive lineman being a Senior this year plus the loss of Juaquin Iglesias, Quentin Chaney and Manuel Johnson at Wide Receiver. Jermaine Gresham decided to return but Bradford is going to need more than him in order to win the Heisman again.
Tebow is losing Percy Harvin plus Louis Murphy, Kestahn Moore, and several offensive linemen, so he’ll be challenged to win the Heisman again as well. Good thing the entire defense is back for the defense of the national championship.
