The Best Spots
Here’s the play of the game from the Super Bowl- Santonio Holmes (from Ohio State) making a spectacular touchdown catch. Amazing throw by Roethlisberger and horrible attempt at triple coverage by the Cardinals.
To what really matters- the commercials- it was a pretty strong showing but several notable duds: Budweiser pretty much mailed the evening in with a series of Clydesdale commercials that were pretty meh. In fact, Pepsi and Coke have completely replaced Budweiser at the top of the heap in terms of quantity and quality. Also, the Godaddy.com commercials were neither smart nor sexy, just a giant waste of money in a situation where they clearly have too much money.
Best commercial of the evening for me has to go to the “Pepsuber” ad. If for no other reason than the MacGyver cameo, this ad takes the cake:
A very close second was the E*Trade Talking Baby spot (with two babies). Hilarious content and the Mr. Mister reference scores huge points with me:
Third place goes to the Pepsi Max “I’m Good” spot. Classic male humor- quick, painful, and catchy. My favorite scene is the dude standing backwards in the limo- good stuff.
Fourth place goes to Coke Zero and the “Mean Troy” ad. Coke gets loads of points for referencing the original Mean Joe Green spot, not only for the Steelers reference but also getting the likeness of the original commercial down all the way to the little kid’s butt-cut haircut. Weaving in the “taste infringement” series was flawless and simply brilliant.
Finally, fifth place goes to the Monster “Need a new job?” spot which I call Moosehead. The punchline on this one is hilarious and hits a little too close to home for much of the workforce. Well done.
Honorable mention for “Best Artsy Spot” goes to Coke for “Heist”. Excellent special effects, clever story line, and excellent soundtrack, though not sure what “Peter & the Wolf” have to do with the plot (if someone gets that, would love to know).
