Will the 2012 Republican Presidential candidates please stand up?
In successive weeks, two of the leading Republican hopefuls for 2012 have taken hits in the public spotlight, and in spectacular fashion.
First, Nevada Senator John Ensign admitted he was diddling the wife of one of his staffers. Then, outspoken South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford admitted to an extended affair with an Argentinian lass.
The sudden death of Michael Jackson may spare Sanford from a few degrees of public scrutiny, but politics is still perception- and any political momentum Republicans had gained took several steps backward over the last couple weeks.
Ensign was one of the lone bright spots in the Senate for Republicans and Sanford had been particularly effective speaking against the stimulus plan. Now that their political reputations are damaged, much of their promise and accomplishments are gone with them.
Mitt Romney stands to gain the most from the fall of Ensign and Sanford, but individual gains ring hollow for a party that’s getting trampled by the will of the far left. Somebody better stand up and display some leadership or the damage from the most progressive President in generations will only get worse.
