The Miss USA pageant missed an extraordinary opportunity this week. They could have lent immediate credibility to their platform but instead, further fed the travesty that the pageant is.

It all started with a question. Miss California (Carrie Prejean) was by all accounts either in the lead or darn close.

It was the Q&A portion of the evening and Judge #8’s number was drawn- Perez Hilton.

For the uninitiated, Perez Hilton is a celebrity blogger and an outspoken homosexual. His question was current given recent news: Should other states follow the lead of Vermont and three other states by legalizing same sex marriage.

Though stumbling a bit, Miss California showed tremendous poise in both handling a challenging question and expressing her beliefs unwaveringly. Take a listen:

Watch the video again and this time focus on Perez Hilton’s facial expressions. While asking the question, he’s almost giddy- either from simply being on TV or perhaps because he was lobbing what he thought was an underhand softball that he expected the contestant to knock right out of the park. Something to the effect of “I believe people should have the legal right to marry whomever they choose…”.

What he got was a line drive right back in the face and his facial expression at the end of the exchange tells the story- pain/surprise/contempt. Perez scored Miss California a “0″ for that answer, and because of that and some other scores, Miss California finished as Runner-up to Miss North Carolina.

Later that evening, Perez dropped this gem onto the world via the internet:

While the response from Perez was disgusting and distasteful, it wasn’t alltogether that surprising coming from him.

The real disappointment is the pageant judges not giving Miss California high marks for her remarkable show of character and integrity. Long ridiculed for being a setback to the women’s rights movement, the pageant missed a tremendous opportunity.

Miss California could have very easily given a safe answer- something to the effect of “it’s up to each state to make that decision…”. She would have scored solid points for that answer and probably would have ended up with the crown. Given the coaching that the contestants receive, she probably was coached on the very issue.

Instead, Carrie Prejean verbalized her beliefs while still expressing compassion for the choices others make. The Miss USA organization would have been served very well by somebody with the depth of character such as Ms. Prejean.

Instead they default back to the stereotype- a superficial beauty contest that at best builds self-esteem and at worst objectifies women.

The story of the woman who called 911 over her McNugget injustice is getting much publicity but for my money, it doesn’t hold a candle to the Western BBQ Burger incident of 2007. The responses from this 911 dispatcher belongs in the training manual for “how to deal with morons on the phone”. I hope she was commended for her efforts.

The Real Way to Fix the Housing Market

President Obama will go on television tonight to speak to a joint session of Congress about the various economic plans that have been rolled out to date. As is the case with nearly everything he says, it will sound good, it will be stirring, much of it will be wrong for America but will be said with enough of a flourish to play, and much will be contrary to what his administration actually does.

The reason why Team Obama’s housing plan won’t work, and why much of their economic proposals won’t work is that their methodology is flawed at the root. Their methodology primarily involves trying to manipulate outputs, rather than making systemic changes to the inputs. You could certainly argue that you have to stabilize the outputs first, then make system changes and I would agree with that, but even their initial moves aren’t going to work. And worse yet, Obama hasn’t learned a thing from the mistakes George Bush made.

The first part of the Obama plan is to modify existing mortgages so that borrowers are paying what they can afford per some formulas. This is un-American on many, many levels, but it also disregards the fact that many of these people have a chronic finance problem including credit card debt and cars they can’t afford. So not only is setting up price controls flawed per economic theory, but ignoring the underlying problem many of these people have dooms this to failure. Lesson #1: Throwing good money after bad doesn’t work.

Another part of the Obama plan allows for judges to re-write loans to allow people to stay in homes they should have never been able to afford in the first place. This provides a disincentive for people to stay current on their loans, and once again has the government picking the winners and the losers. Welfare programs show what behaviors dis-incentives promote- the wrong ones. Lesson #2: Lack of incentive creates a careless, unmotivated electorate.

For people already in foreclosure and about to lose their homes,our solution is much more of a free-market tactic: Rather than using tax payer money to directly fund loan modifications which may or may not work, allow tax payers with the financial where-with-all (the same tax-payers that are going to end up paying for the modification) to purchase the loans and rent to the current homeowners. The government would guarantee the loans within a certain threshold and would also stipulate the rent structure for the program so that predatory situations are avoided. Only individuals or families that are American citizens can take advantage of the program (no foreign entities and no corporations) and no individual or family can acquire more than five loans in total.

If the former homeowners don’t pay the rent, they’re out on the street. With so many people already losing their homes, there are plenty of available renters. Many loans won’t be assumed because the numbers don’t work- they’re the ones that are headed for default no matter what help is given. The point is the free market selects this vs. the government choosing winners and losers. As an added benefit, jobs will be created through property management companies, maintenance/repair folks, and tax advisors assisting investors.

As an alternative, our second plan involves a method for homeowners to catch up on their payments should they choose. Our plan would provide up to $7,500 in grants to homeowners to help them catch up on delinquent mortgage payments. The catch is the money must be directly applied toward mortgage payments and cannot be used for anything else. And, in order to get the money, the homeowners must perform community service in return. The grant money would be amortized as follows:

*Each hour of community service is worth $10. If a homeowner were to get the entire $7,500, they would “pay back” that amount by providing 10 hours of community service every week for about a year and a half. A steep price to pay but isn’t it better than losing your home- plus it provides something in return for hard-earned tax payer funds that would otherwise go down a hole.

Finally, for those in exotic or highly-escalating adjustable mortgages, you’re out of luck. Call me heartless but there are times in life when you have to learn tough lessons. If you didn’t read what you were signing or knowingly purchased a home that you never should have been able to afford, you’re a renter. If Senators want to create a separate foreclosure status for these people so their future credit is less impacted, go for it.

Octo-Math

I wish this story would go away but it just isn’t. Unemployed, single mother of six turned unemployed, single octuplet mother Nadya Suleman is going to cost the taxpayers of California a hefty premium. According to reports, the hospital taking care of the octuplets has filed for Medical, California’s medicaid program. That’s bad news for a state that’s already facing $42 billion budget shortfall.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the average premature baby’s hospital stay in California costs $164,273. Multiply that by 8 and you get $1,314,184, the large part of which will fall to John & Julio Doe to pay.

All that on top of the $490 that Suleman is already receiving a month in food stamps and $2,400 a month in disability payments for three of the original six kids. Oh, don’t worry though, according to CBS news Suleman is planning on going to school at Cal State Fullerton for a Master’s Degree in Counseling, and she’s apparently going to use the student loan money to help pay for her children.

Worse still, the birthing vessel now has a website up with pictures of the octuplets and surprisingly enough- a donation link that even accepts credit cards. Congratulations Ms. Suleman- you’ve now become the face of the welfare problem in this country, and not a week too soon.

A Fungus Amongus

In dramatically partisan fashion, the House passed the Stimulus Bill (forgive me- the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) Wednesday evening by a vote of 244-188.

The bill, which currently stands in the neighborhood of $820 billion is expected to be $900 billion+ by the time the Senate gets into it next week. Despite President Obama’s “made-for-tv” interface with House Republicans, not a single Republican in the House voted for the bill and 11 Democrats “defected”.

I’ll have a post later about the details and scope of the house bill, but one doesn’t have to go more than 9 pages into the thing to see evidence of a government out of control and unable to stop itself from growing at an alarming rate.

First, Section 1106 provides for 1/2 % of the total of each amount in the bill to be allocated to “management and oversight” of the programs presented in the bill. I’ll will subsequently refer to section 1106 as the slush section since that’s what it really is.

Further to that, Section 1107 sets aside even more money for “oversight and management” of the programs approved. Here’s the preface to section 1107 which details departmental appropriations:

“In addition to funds otherwise made available in this Act, there are hereby appropriated the following sums to the specified Offices or Inspector General, to remain available until September 30, 2013, for oversight and audit of programs, grants, and projects funded under this Act”

Before I get to the totals, I’d like to take a philosophical timeout. If you were creating a government from scratch and this was one of the first acts of that government, you could certainly understand appropriations for these things. But these appropriations are going toward government offices that already exist and are heavily bloated by their current structure.

Tell me in what business context (ever) would a couple new projects and modification of a few existing ones result in hundreds of millions of dollars in expenditures to simply support oversight and auditing, not even to do the work itself. The answer is it would never happen. The business would be bankrupt before the quarter ended. But for the government, this is but a fraction of the waste that goes on every day.

Listed below is a summary of the $233.5 million in departmental appropriations for this oversight, and keep in mind, this is on top of the 1/2 % referenced in section 1106:

Dept. of Agriculture: $22.5 million
Dept. of Commerce: $10 million
Dept. of Defense: $15 million
Dept. of Education: $14 million
Dept. of Energy: $15 million
Dept. of Health & Human Services: $19 million
Dept. of Homeland Security: $2 million
HUD: $15 million
Dept. of the Interior: $15 million
Justice Dept.: $2 million
Dept. of Labor: $6 million
Dept. of Transportation: $20 million
Dept. of Veterans Affairs: $1 million
Environmental Protection Agency: $20 million
GSA General Activities Office: $15 million
Nasa: $2 million
Corporation for National and Community Service: $1 million
Government Accountability Office: $25 million

To recap- that’s $233.5 million just in oversight ($40 million in oversight of the oversight), all incremental to the 1/2 % also set aside and to the $900 billion total price tag. If none of this pisses you off, you obviously have way too much money and I’d appreciate you sending some of it my way

Uhhhh……….

See if you can stay with me on this one. Promoting the idea of putting a condom on stimulus as part of the stimulus package, whilst it not actually being stimulating in and of itself, but a savings of dollars via the likely resultant un-protected stimulus, even though that savings comes at a significant cost, is by default stimulus.

Confused? Hey, maybe Nancy Pelosi can help explain it. Or instead, maybe she can make this poor young girl look like a third year Mensa member. If Team Nancy really wants to cut down on unwanted pregnancies I suggest she and Barney Frank drop a make-out video onto the scene. That’d probably cost a couple hundred bucks to “produce” and I’m pretty sure that would sufficiently deflate the tires if you know what I mean, and I know you do.

Planet Blago

It’s a place Fox News’ Shep Smith affectionately calls “Planet Blago”. If there was a channel on television that did nothing but broadcast Rod Blagojevich news conferences, I’d watch it. If Blago really wanted to make some money, he’d set up a couple webcams at Casa Blago. I’d throw down at least $10 a month to watch him talk to his cereal bowl and blow dry that magnificent pelt on the top of his head.

Adopt-a-Terrorist

With President Obama ordering the closure of Guantanomo Thursday (or more specifically, ordering a study into possibly making the decision someday to close Gitmo), the problem that will present itself is what to do with all the terrorists that won’t have a country to go to. It’s for that very reason that we’re starting a campaign, no a plea to adopt-a-terrorist. We figure if just one or two celebrities adopt one of the detainees at Gitmo, the movement will catch on and the problem of where to put these people simply goes away.

Faiz Mohammed Ahmed Al Kandari

According to documents released by the Combatant Status Review Board (CSRB), Faiz is part of al Qaida, has family ties to an al Qaida cell that killed a U.S. soldier in Kuwait, and he recruited personnel to participate in the Jihad in Afghanistan and arranged for travel from the United Arab Emirates to Pakistan. I suspect he also likes walks in the park and frozen yogurt.

Samir is a real tough guy, but probably would also be good around the house for cleaning and such. According to the CSRB report he is a Yemen citizen who traveled to Afghanistan to fight in the Jihad. He stayed in a house owned by the Taliban and in August of 2001 became a bodyguard for Usama Bin Laden. He also participated in military operations against the United States and the coalition forces. Word is his favorite color is sunshine yellow and he enjoys knitting and sudoku puzzles.

Saad worked for and was affiliated with the terrorist organization al Wafa. According to the CSRB reports, Saad is an Islamic extremist who participated in extremist activity in Kuwait as a member of the group known as the “Takfir Seven”. He was arrested with a known al Qaida member who owned a Karachi al Qaida safehouse. Saad’s a Chargers fan and enjoys sushi and appletinis.

Fayed was a Taliban fighter spending time on the front lines of the fight against the Northern Alliance in 2001. He was captured in Mazir-E-Sharif and was injured in a prison uprising there. Fayed enjoys watching Rachel Ray and playing lawn Jarts.

Mohamed was allegedly to be the “20th terrorist” for the 9/11 attacks but was detained prior to. According to Wikipedia, one of the organizers of the September 11th attacks, Mustafa al-Hawsawi, referred to al-Kahtani as “the last one” to “complete the group”. He was charged with war crimes and murder, facing the death penalty if convicted, but charges were dropped because of alleged torture and illegal interrogation. Rumor has it Mohamed enjoys restoring vintage cars and raising hamsters.

Welcome to the New America

I’m still working on a post that highlights the trash in the stimulus bill making it’s way around Washington (it’s not all bad). While working on that, I caught some coverage of Robert Reich speaking to Ways & Means Committee on the stimulus. Reich is President Obama’s Economic Adviser. The clip below, which includes Reich and Ways & Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel, is spliced and obviously includes some pretty heavy right-wing commentary. Putting some of that aside, the dialogue between the two is simply chilling.

The way that our government throws around the prospects of an $800 billion to $1 trillion spending package is disgusting enough, but to hear these two talk about “criteria” to be “set so that money does go to others, the long-term unemployed, minorities, women…” is simply stomach churning. I thought the intent of the stimulus package was to create economic growth and short-term stability. Silly me- it turns out it’s a means (and an expensive one) for the far left to execute all of their pet projects and constituent promises. Absolutely disgusting.

Go Fish

The next time you saunter up to the seafood counter at your grocery store and ask for 1/2 pound of Halibut, you might want to consider changing your terminology. Of course if you do, you’re likely to get thrown out of the store, especially if you do what the PETA people are calling for.

Sea Kittens.

That’s what PETA is pushing for fish to be called- Sea Kittens. Apparently they think I will find a nice piece of Halibut seared and served with a beurre blanc less appetizing if it’s called a sea kitten. Nope. In case you’ve got a snow day today, or are just looking to lose a couple hours, here’s a fun game to play. Slightly reminiscent of penguin tossing, this is turkey bowling courtesy of “Ten Items or Less”.

“Ten Items or Less” is a comedy on TBS. It’s a funny show that’s got an above average cast, decent writing, and is just quirky enough to keep me watching. The game is addictive and will kill a couple hours if you’re not careful. My high score is 194 (proof below). Click this link for the game.

The News Desk

Busy week last week, but I did manage to pop my head up for a bit and take a look around the current events.

In what is yet another reason to avoid living next to a mob boss, one of the last murder cases involving former mob head John Gotti was solved this week. According to the report, Gotti had his neighbor executed and then the crew “disposed” of the body by dissolving it in a vat of acid. That’s right, a vat of acid. According to the reports, the dude who carried out the “dissolution” was Charles Carneglia. According to a witness statement, Carneglia had acid in his basement “by the drum”. The whole thing makes “the Soprano’s” seem tame.

In still another attempt at gaining my public support, President Elect Barack Obama (from the Office of the President Elect) made yet another public plea for a playoff in D-I college football. I have to admit, it’s starting to work on me. If he goes as far as setting up a meeting with key University Presidents to discuss the matter, I’m getting a Prius, slapping an Obama bumper sticker on the back and driving it to the nearest Obama army checkpoint to sign up for duty. Even with only a few days left in the Bush presidency, the center for negative governmental information continues their “operation erode support of Bush” (OESOB) by hitting Americans with more bad news. The barrage of data on unemployment, falling wages, increasing health care, diminished consumer confidence, etc got a new salvo with the following tidbit: 34% of Americans are obese. Everything is now in place for “Operation Restore American’s Self-Image” (ORASI) shortly after inauguration.

The war on keeping one’s own income is starting to materialize with hints about who the Dems are going to tax first. House Democrats are re-visiting a proposal that would raise the Federal cigarette tax from 39 cents to $1, a move that would generate an estimated $53 billion over ten years. That is, until the states and the counties follow suit and a pack of smokes edges up to $10. When it gets to that point, I suggest people just start smoking a five and two ones rolled up. Less nicotine to be sure, but at least you can directly oversee how your money gets squandered plus you still get the physical fix.

Obama is urging Congress to postpone the switch on February 17th to digital television. A $40 voucher program has been in place to help poor Americans purchase the $50 converters that will be needed to receive digital over the air signals on TV’s not connected to cable or satellite. The program was originally capped at $1.34 billion of yours and my tax dollars. At $40 a coupon, that means that 33 1/2 million people can’t afford a $50 converter box according to the government’s calculations. Obama transition team co-chair John Podesta in a letter to Congress called the $1.34 billion already spent “woefully inadequate” and pledged that the matter would be dealt with in the Obama economic stimulus package. Meredith Atwell Baker, head of the NTIA (part of the Commerce Department) is asking for an additional $250 million.

All of this is completely absurd. First of all- is there really anything that important on television? The answer obviously is no. Any critical information would be broadcast on radio as well. The converter boxes can be purchased without a voucher, you just have to fork over all $50. If you can’t save up $50, than you’ve got far greater problems than missing Judge Judy and Oprah for a few weeks. Plus, I have no doubt these boxes are available in pawn shops and on the street for probably $20-$30 if people were really desperate for them. This is just more government mismanagement, being handed off from one administration to the next, and at the expense of you and I.

Steve Jobs Says No Jigglies for You

Making use of the shaking/jiggling ability of the iPhone, software maker Mystic Game Development created an app called “iBoobs” (shown above). The iBoobs application is a computer animation of a large pair of breasts in a bikini top. Shaking the iPhone makes them wobble from side to side, or up and down, depending on the movement.

According to a report, the folks at Apple rejected the app because of “objectionable content”. I didn’t realize inertia, gravity, and nature are all “objectionable”.

I’m not saying I’m the type of dude that would put this app on my iPhone, that is if I were the type of dude to own an iPhone. This would have been an optional app though- users would have had to download it to their phones. It’s not as if the app would just show up in the middle of a conference call (though that would dramatically improve most of the conference calls I spend my time on).

Wii-itis

According to a Fox News report, up to 10 people a week are being treated for Wii-related injuries. Apparently, most of the injuries are related to sudden movement, resulting in tendon stretching or tearing. Doctors refer to the injuries as “Wii-itis” or “Wii-knee”.

Most of the injuries are being reported in the U.K., which has prompted U.K. doctors to issue Wii-warnings, and which also confirms my suspicions that the British are getting softer.

With all this going on, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before lawyas in the U.S. fire up a couple class action lawsuits toward Nintendo, thus driving up the cost of Wiis and the related accessories. I suppose Congress would eventually come up with a Wii rescue plan, but who knows how long that could take.

As a preemptive move, I call on all Wii-loving Americans to do your American duty and, should you injure yourself playing a video game, play through the pain. No grimacing, no missing work, no cortisone treatments- suck it up and swing that controller. Do it for your country.

Last Minute Shopping

If you’re doing some last minute shopping this weekend, don’t look for these products. Nothing cheapens Christmas like annoying commercials and these are three of the worst.

The first is for “The Snuggie” which advertises itself as “the blanket with sleeves!”. That might sound like a good idea if you’re sitting around a room with your mates stoned, but in practice it’s just creepy.

Second is for the Shamwow, which by itself is a fairly harmless product. The problem with the ad is the douchey infomercial “dj” running play-by-play on the liquid soaking up and whatnot. If you are wearing a fake microphone on an infomercial, you are a tool.

The final commercial that makes me want to throw something through the TV is the fast cash company JG Wentworth. Commercials always lose points in my rankings when founders or presidents appear, as is the case here, but a fake opera espousing the benefits of Wentworth is an FCC violation.

Op-Ed

Providing some rationality to the next “gun to our head economic moment”, here’s Mitt Romney’s Op Ed piece from the Tuesday New York Times. Below the article, I’ve also posted the top five response comments as selected by Times’ readers. Obviously most of those readers are in disagreement with Governor Romney but I thought it would provide interesting counterpoint.

If you watched any of the sessions on Congress this week on C-Span like I did, you know the whole thing is an embarrassing circus. The automotive CEO’s had a constant look of helplessness- helpless to control their businesses that are already heaving under the weight of massive government regulation and union control, and will be under further control should they get some of yours and mine tax dollars. Sprinkled in with that was the Ford CEO occasionally breaking into a Broadway show/TV commercial singing the praises of “the Ford lineup”. Tasteful.

Never mind too that folks on both sides of the hill act like they’re sitting on a giant pile of money. Every discussion involves further deficit spending putting not only our well-being at risk, but our children’s.

As for some of the comments after Romney’s piece below, several people point to socialized health care as the solution. I think socialized medicine is great in theory, but in practice in other countries it’s flawed at best. Add to that clear evidence that our government hasn’t been able to manage any large social program successfully, bankrupting or nearly bankrupting each along the way.

Also, any discussion on health care can’t be complete without discussing controls on the spiraling costs associated with health care courtesy of our good friends- the trial lawyers. Without addressing the dramatic inflationary effect attorneys have had on health care and big pharm, universal healthcare will be DOA.

I don’t support “leaving workers high and dry” either as many on the left suggest of the right. I believe limited federal funds should be made available to those workers that are displaced. However, I support this with a degree of tough love as well. If these workers are as highly-skilled as the unions and the wages would lead us to believe, they should have no trouble finding similar work in related manufacturing fields. Sure they may have to pick up their family and move, sometimes that’s what it takes. It’s better than living in a cardboard box.

Also, the big three have been struggling for several years now. The workers of those companies surely have better insight into that struggle than people on the outside, so those folks should have been preparing alternate career plans all along via additional trade training, community college, whatever.

Finally, I feel bad for the retirees whom likely can no longer earn a living and are most dependent on medical coverage. But again, those people would have made choices throughout their employment career and should they have hedged their entire retirement on pension, even as pensions have evaporated over the last decade, than that’s a risk they took on with full cognition.

Also, and I guess this makes me a cold conservative, how big is their house? How big is their boat? How many nice cars are they driving? How big is their Winnebago? How big is their summer home/hunting lodge? I’d like to know before my income gets funneled to them. I lived in Detroit for two years and the dude that lived across from me was a union autoworker. He had a giant house (a “Parade of Homes” house), a giant boat, a gorgeous red corvette, a giant SUV, and a summer home. Joe auto worker has been living very, very well.

Here’s Romney’s letter to the editor:

IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.

I love cars, American cars. I was born in Detroit, the son of an auto chief executive. In 1954, my dad, George Romney, was tapped to run American Motors when its president suddenly died. The company itself was on life support — banks were threatening to deal it a death blow. The stock collapsed. I watched Dad work to turn the company around — and years later at business school, they were still talking about it. From the lessons of that turnaround, and from my own experiences, I have several prescriptions for Detroit’s automakers.

First, their huge disadvantage in costs relative to foreign brands must be eliminated. That means new labor agreements to align pay and benefits to match those of workers at competitors like BMW, Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Furthermore, retiree benefits must be reduced so that the total burden per auto for domestic makers is not higher than that of foreign producers.

That extra burden is estimated to be more than $2,000 per car. Think what that means: Ford, for example, needs to cut $2,000 worth of features and quality out of its Taurus to compete with Toyota’s Avalon. Of course the Avalon feels like a better product — it has $2,000 more put into it. Considering this disadvantage, Detroit has done a remarkable job of designing and engineering its cars. But if this cost penalty persists, any bailout will only delay the inevitable.

Second, management as is must go. New faces should be recruited from unrelated industries — from companies widely respected for excellence in marketing, innovation, creativity and labor relations.

The new management must work with labor leaders to see that the enmity between labor and management comes to an end. This division is a holdover from the early years of the last century, when unions brought workers job security and better wages and benefits. But as Walter Reuther, the former head of the United Automobile Workers, said to my father, “Getting more and more pay for less and less work is a dead-end street.”

You don’t have to look far for industries with unions that went down that road. Companies in the 21st century cannot perpetuate the destructive labor relations of the 20th. This will mean a new direction for the U.A.W., profit sharing or stock grants to all employees and a change in Big Three management culture.

The need for collaboration will mean accepting sanity in salaries and perks. At American Motors, my dad cut his pay and that of his executive team, he bought stock in the company, and he went out to factories to talk to workers directly. Get rid of the planes, the executive dining rooms — all the symbols that breed resentment among the hundreds of thousands who will also be sacrificing to keep the companies afloat.

Investments must be made for the future. No more focus on quarterly earnings or the kind of short-term stock appreciation that means quick riches for executives with options. Manage with an eye on cash flow, balance sheets and long-term appreciation. Invest in truly competitive products and innovative technologies — especially fuel-saving designs — that may not arrive for years. Starving research and development is like eating the seed corn.

Just as important to the future of American carmakers is the sales force. When sales are down, you don’t want to lose the only people who can get them to grow. So don’t fire the best dealers, and don’t crush them with new financial or performance demands they can’t meet.

It is not wrong to ask for government help, but the automakers should come up with a win-win proposition. I believe the federal government should invest substantially more in basic research — on new energy sources, fuel-economy technology, materials science and the like — that will ultimately benefit the automotive industry, along with many others. I believe Washington should raise energy research spending to $20 billion a year, from the $4 billion that is spent today. The research could be done at universities, at research labs and even through public-private collaboration. The federal government should also rectify the imbedded tax penalties that favor foreign carmakers.

But don’t ask Washington to give shareholders and bondholders a free pass — they bet on management and they lost.

The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs. The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk.

In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.

In no other industrialized nation does the manufacturer bear the cost of health care for it’s workers (that cost inflated because the risk, therefor the cost, is not evenly spread through society).

Without universal health care, how can our manufacturers compete with any industrialized nation??

That’s the best you can do? The workers must suffer for managements sins as usual. I like the way the good old capitalists always compare the workers of other countries to ours but fail to mention that they have cradle to grave security with socialized medicine, real social security at a living income, maternity leave, 36 hour work weeks and all that stuff that none of you good old republicans want anybody to have because you don’t want to pay any taxes. Gee I wonder why our companies are going bankrupt trying to do what other countries are doing for their citizens.

You don’t even want to pay taxes for your Iraq war. Oh yeah, you include the management and truth be told we do need the management because the auto business is well, the auto business so it takes an auto executive. I agree with the poor management idea and I agree that there are some lazy workers who make too much money but if you really look at what it takes to live in our world you wouldn’t be so fast to keep pushing the workers down. The rich always seem to want to blame everybody else. How about raising your capital gains taxes and making sure that there is not such a huge incentive to trade stocks. Encourage real ownership not this roulette wheel that the stock market has become.

My solution buy some cars. The government should go out and buy lots and lots of the most fuel efficient and environmentally responsible cars and trade them to people with old tired gas guzzlers and scrap ‘um. Save gas, reduce pollution, create jobs, reduce crowding on the roads and recycle the old cars. People pay state and local tax, licence and insurance. We don’t have time for what you want to do. Detroit already makes some great cars but people just can’t afford them. Sure make the companies present a plan and stick to it to be on the list to sell a car of two or 200,000. $10,000 a car what a bargain for a bailout.

Romney’s advice misses the point almost completely.

Yes, the industry’s costs are too high. We need national health care, as our competitor countries have, to unburden industry from this expense that we as a nation most bear for our fellow citizens. It is an economic and a moral imperative.

Second, it beggars belief that we should beat up the industry for providing just those vehicles that Americans wanted to buy. The fault lies not in their production decisions, it lies in the cowardice of our political leaders. The countries of Europe have for years imposed high fuel taxes that have both pumped money into mass transit and pushed demand toward small fuel-efficient cars. The American manufacturers we criticize for building the cars we wanted to buy here have been building the cars Europeans wanted (small and efficient) for the European market for years. It’s time for our self-righteous leaders to raise our fuel taxes at a steady rate until the price of a gallon is no less than $10. That is achievable by the end of the second Obama term.

Mr. Romney, please go back to Massachusetts and save your self-serving advice for someone else.

Sorry, but railing against a “bailout” is demagoguery. Exactly who gets bailed out is crucial.

Your plan would shield customers, which is necessary, and not reward stock and bondholders, which is correct. But shedding labor contracts and pensions would severely punish the equally innocent workers and retirees. Worse, putting people out of work and drastically cutting pay and benefits for remaining workers would not only hurt them, it would have significant secondary impact on the area and national economies when we can least afford it.

A bailout should go toward restructuring the companies, bringing in new management AND at least partially protecting workers and retirees with extra benefits to make up for the income they will lose. In other words, the government should assume at least part of the cost of those contracts and pensions granted when things were rosy.

It’s fine to invoke “creative destruction” but not for (a) retirees; (b) this massive a work force. The government should be the buffer.

There’s your bailout, Mr. Romney… not that the plight of workers and retirees would ever bother your head.

Oh dear, is this too much like socialism? Hmmm… I guess it is when it’s to help people… but when it’s to help rich companies and their owners/executives, it’s something else, eh?

If the economy were merely anemic and not in Stage 4, the auto companies could borrow more capital to get them through this liquidity crisis, but they can’t. Nancy Pelosi Unveils ‘The Mother of all Stimulus Plans’

Amid continued discussions on the hill for bailouts of additional U.S. corporations and various levels of taxpayer stimulus, Nancy Pelosi pushed her chips all in and unveiled what is being hailed as “the mother of all stimulus packages”.

Pelosi’s plan calls for $1 million stimulus checks to be delivered sometime in the 1st quarter to each household currently earning less than $1 million per year. “We feel it is important to proactively engage the bulk of America with proper stimuli rather than allowing each business and population group to gradually come forward for help” Pelosi said, adding “we simply don’t have time in the Senate for any more hearings”. Barney Frank added “harumph, harumph, gargle, gargle, George Bush can kiss my ass”.

With approximately 96 million households under the $1 million income mark, the pricetag for the plan is roughly $96 trillion. “A small price to pay for America’s future” said Pelosi.

When asked how the plan would be paid for, Pelosi indicated reductions on future appropriations would offset a portion, plus seizures of bank accounts held by those in the $1 million+ household category would occur “here and there”.

Economists who have studied the plan encouraged stimuli recipients to quickly exchange the funds to Canadian dollars or Yen, depending on “whomever takes us over”.

According to a White House spokesperson, George Bush was unavailable for comment because he was “packing up his knick knacks and figurines.”

The lame duck session of Congress is expected to vote on the plan Thursday or Friday.

Welcome to your new Socialist Utopia, Captain McCain and Private First Class Obama at the helm. Major insurers- taken over by the government. Fannie & Freddie- taken over by the government. Financial markets- bailed out by the government. Healthcare- taken over by the government. Questionable mortgages- rescued by the government. Your retirement- in the hands of the government.

Work. Don’t work. We don’t give a shit. In fact, if you work too hard and carve out some success for you and your family, we’re going to knock you back into line by taxing you into the stone ages. After all, it’s patriotic for the government to take your prosperity, mismanage it, and dole out a fraction of what you would have given had you been able to keep it yourself.

Have a $650,000 negatively-amortizing mortgage but only earn $50k a year? Those bastard lenders- they’re to blame for puttin’ all those fancy words and numbers on that real estate contract you signed. We got you covered brother- don’t sweat it. We’re gonna’ reset your mortgage and subsidize the banks so nobody learns from their mistakes.

I can’t be the only person in this country that feels as though our Democracy is spiraling out of control and into the hands of politicians. We aren’t far from being so beholden to Washington that individual citizens will be virtually powerless to meaningfully impact their own lives. As the saying goes, the inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.

The Senate passed the economic assistance plan last night after some revisions, lots of additions, and a little mild-mannered stumping. Most of the bill is good for Americans- control on how money is spent on junk, oversight on the $700 billion, relief on mark to market, increase of the FDIC insurance limit, etc.

Unfortunately, at a critical time in the country’s history, the Senate felt compelled to load the bill up with all kinds of extras that have little or nothing to do with the intent of the bill. It’s all a trading game- bits and pieces added to persuade votes in the house to make the bill successful. If an ordinary citizen were to attempt to persuade a congressman or woman to vote for a bill by providing them with financial influence, they’d be thrown in jail for bribery. Yet, in Washington it’s perfectly legal, even encouraged to do so.

For your reading enjoyment, here are some excerpts from the 451 pages:

Section 110: Assistance to Homeowners, subsection b.1:
To the extent that the Federal property manager holds, owns, or controls mortgages, mortgage backed securities, and other assets secured by residential real estate, including multi-family housing, the Federal property manager shall implement a plan that seeks to maximize assistance for homeowners and use its authority to encourage the servicers of the underlying mortgages, and considering net present value to the taxpayer, to take advantage of the HOPE for Homeowners Program under section 257 of the National Housing Act or other available programs to minimize foreclosures. (subsection b.2)- Modifications - In the case of a residential mortgage loan, modifications made under paragraph (1) may include- (A) reduction in interest rates; (B) reduction of loan principal; and © other similar modifications.

Section 122: Increase in Statutory Limit on the Public Debt-
Subsection (b) of section 3101 of title 31, United States Code, is amended by striking out the dollar limitation contained in such subsection and inserting “$11,315,000,000,000″. (That’s $11.315 trillion dollars in case you got lost in the zeros).

Page 113, Division B: Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008-

Includes extensions to things like existing renewable energy credits, clean renewable energy bonds, temporary increase in the coal excise tax, and about 20 other mind-numbingly boring and verbose sections. Most of it is very positive for America but has absolutely nothing to do with the terms of the bailout. Here’s an excerpt for your reading enjoyment, and evidence why nothing gets done in Washington:

In General, notwithstanding subsections (a)(1) and © of section 6416 and section 6511 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, if-
(i) a coal producer establishes that such coal producer, or a party related to such coal producer, exported coal produced by such coal producer to a foreign country or shipped coal produced by such coal producer to a possession of the United States, or caused such coal to be exported or shipped, the export or shipment of which was other than through an exporter who meets the requirements of paragraph (2),
(ii) such coal producer filed an excise tax return on or after October 1, 1990, and on or before the date of the enactment of this Act, and
(iii) such coal producer files a claim for refund with the Secretary not later than the close of the 30-day period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act, then the secretary shall pay to such coal producer an amount equal to the tax paid under section 4121…….if you’re still reading this you are a fine and dedicated American.

Section 332: Tax incentives for investment in the District of Columbia-
(a) Designation of Zone- (1) In General- Subsection (f) of section 1400 is amended by striking “2007″ both places it appears and inserting “2009″.

On extending much needed to help wool producers and researchers…

Section 325: Extension and modification of duty suspension on wool products; wool research fund; wool duty refunds-

(a) Extension of temporary Duty restrictions- Each of the following headings of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States is amended by striking the date in the effective period column and inserting “12/31/2014″: (1) Heading 9902.51.11 (relating to fabrics of worsted wool)., (2) Heading 9902.51.13 (relating to yarn of combined wool), (3) Heading 9902.51.14 (relating to wool fiber, waste, garnetted stock, combed wool, or wool top), (4) Heading 9902.51.15 (relating to fabrics of combed wool), (5) Heading 9902.51.16 (relating to fabrics of combed wool). Section 503: Exemption from excise tax for certain Wooden Arrows designed for use by children-
(a) In General- Paragraph (2) of section 4161(b) is amended by redesignating subparagraph (B) as subparagraph © and by inserting after subparagraph (A) the following new subparagraph: “(B) Exemption for certain wooden arrow shafts.- Subparagraph (A) shall not apply to any shaft consisting of all natural wood with no laminations or artificial means of enhancing the spine of such shaft (whether sold separately or incorporated as part of a finished or unfinished product) of a type used in the manufacture of any arrow which after its assembly- ‘(i) measures 5/16 of an inch or less in diameter, and (ii) is not suitable for use with a bow described in paragraph (1)(A).’”.

Bastardization of the word Bipartisan

Bipartisan: bi·par·ti·san; adjective; of, relating to, or involving members of two parties ; specifically : marked by or involving cooperation, agreement, and compromise between two major political parties.

Irrational exhuberance has played out daily this week with a 700 point drop, a ~500 point rise, and a flatline (so far) today in the Dow. Wall Street appears to be holding its’ collective breath waiting for the bailout (or the rescue plan, or the poor-decision-making-assistance-plan, or whatever people are calling it). The vote failed in Congress thanks to folks like a bazillion economics faculty from all around the country who delivered this letter to Congress:

To the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate:
 
As economists, we want to express to Congress our great concern for the plan proposed by Treasury Secretary Paulson to deal with the financial crisis. We are well aware of the difficulty of the current financial situation and we agree with the need for bold action to ensure that the financial system continues to function. We see three fatal pitfalls in the currently proposed plan:
 
1) Its fairness. The plan is a subsidy to investors at taxpayers’ expense. Investors who took risks to earn profits must also bear the losses.  Not every business failure carries systemic risk. The government can ensure a well-functioning financial industry, able to make new loans to creditworthy borrowers, without bailing out particular investors and institutions whose choices proved unwise.
 
2) Its ambiguity. Neither the mission of the new agency nor its oversight are clear. If  taxpayers are to buy illiquid and opaque assets from troubled sellers, the terms, occasions, and methods of such purchases must be crystal clear ahead of time and carefully monitored afterwards.
 
3) Its long-term effects.  If the plan is enacted, its effects will be with us for a generation. For all their recent troubles, America’s dynamic and innovative private capital markets have brought the nation unparalleled prosperity.  Fundamentally weakening those markets in order to calm short-run disruptions is desperately short-sighted.
 
For these reasons we ask Congress not to rush, to hold appropriate hearings, and to carefully consider the right course of action, and to wisely determine the future of the financial industry and the U.S. economy for years to come.

In the name of keeping the facts straight, here’s a list of which way the votes actually went, straightening out the assertion by the Democrats that the Republicans submarined the bill. The hard numbers show 2/3rd’s of Republicans voting no with 40% of Democrats doing the same.

One thing you can be damn sure of is none of these people are capable of fixing the problems our economy is facing, or if they are capable, our political system will prevent them from doing so.

Fault lies on both sides in Washington but since the media broadly represents only the left, I feel compelled to point out two things: first, Democrats blocked Bush and the Republicans from trying to reform Fannie and Freddie five years ago, an action that at the very least could have softened what we’re going through right now.

Second, Chris Dodd and Barack Obama stand as the largest recipients of PAC money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac prior to their insolvency- $165,400 for Dodd and $126,349 for Obama. Just so everyone is clear on the timelines- Dodd and the democrats block reform, take in large sums of money, watch the companies collapse, and then blame Bush and McCain for the problem. That’s straight politics homey, gangster style.

In the wake of the house voting down the “rescue” bill, politicians continued to claim to be seeking a bipartisan solution. Yet, as the votes were being cast on the house floor, Nancy Pelosi delivered a toxic “who’s to blame” speech poisoning the vote and showing where real motives lay.

News and Notes

Just a few tidbits to help you get your week started right.

First, in case you’re employed and not high on Marijuana, you might have missed the “naked bike ride to demonstrate against oil” or something that took place in St. Louis Saturday night. Let me just say (at least from watching the video) that most people in the ride were not naked, and certainly none of the remotely attractive people were. You can’t bill the stupid night bike ride as a naked ride unless people are actually naked. If it’s a few people riding naked, well the rest of the people just become voyeurs on a bike, and that really should be confined to the internet (or health clubs).

Also not a real smart idea for men to ride bikes naked what with the giant metal bar running across the frame and a slippery seat from all the sweat and all. Actually, on second thought, those people not reproducing might not be such a bad idea after all. Bonne chance!

Next is a tidbit for you regarding “the US Oil crisis” (cue theme music). Both presidential candidates are making much of record profits in the oil industry, particularly the $11 billion Exxon-Mobil made last quarter. Well, did you know…at a rate of 390 million gallons per day consumed in the U.S. and 18.4 cents per gallon in federal gasoline taxes, the federal government is raking in $6.5 billion per quarter and over $26 billion per year. And all that’s without taking on any of the risk or investment that the oil companies are making to generate their profit. If you want to get pissed off and ride around naked about something, do it about the government’s windfall. Get your priorities straight you jackasses.

This also doesn’t include the money each state takes in which averages 21 cents per gallon and is over 30 cents per gallon in New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

AirTran = AirPotty?

About 10 years ago I vowed never to fly AirTran again. Back then I had to travel A LOT for work and often AirTran had the cheapest fares. My boss was pretty tight with the purse strings so AirTran it was. However, back then their on-time performance was so bad I was actually able to convince my cheapskate boss that I was losing so much productivity due to delayed flights and missed connections that he gave in and let me fly on real airlines. These days I don’t travel that much…maybe a couple times a year to Chicago and/or Orange County, CA and I always fly one of the majors.

Now I see this story about a recent AirTran flight from Florida to Boston. Several questions immediately come to mind after watching the news story, none of which are even addressed in the clip.

1. The flight attendants KNEW that some guy had pissed the seat on the previous flight and DIDN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT?

2. They always tell you that your seat cushion can be used as a flotation device which implies that it is removable but they DIDN’T CHANGE IT?

3. And most importantly, what were the circumstances on the previous flight that led to some guy PISSING HIMSELF in his seat?!?! I mean come on, give us something. Was it an old dude that forgot his Depends? Was it some drunk that passed out and pissed himself in his sleep? Was it a regular dude who had too much coffee and the flight was so bumpy that they wouldn’t let him go to the bathroom and he couldn’t hold it any longer?

Sure it’s gotta suck to be the lady who sat in the pee-seat and then had to walk around Logan Airport in a blanket but I’m sure she’s got lawyers lining up at her door to sue the pants off (rim shot) of AirTran so she’ll be just fine. I want to know how the seat got soaked in pee in the first place. That’s got to be a good story. If anyone knows more about this story, please email the editor or use the comments (if they’re working today).
