Ten (seven) Questions I Can’t Wait to be Answered this Weekend

November 29th, 2008 by Red Renee

How would you like to be a Texas Longhorn fan today? You need Oklahoma to beat Oklahoma State because if OU loses, Texas Tech takes the Big XII South tiebreaker over Texas. But, if Oklahoma wins too big, than OU will certainly leapfrog Texas in the BCS, which would be the tiebreaker for the three-way tie that would result. Confused? You can thank the presidents of our fine universities for that.

Here’s the weather forecast:

1.) Will Georgia Tech have enough surprises with the triple option to upset Georgia? Georgia Tech is coming off a loss to North Carolina and has wins over two I-AA on their resume. Still, it will be interesting to see Coach Paul Johnson making his Tech debut in the rivalry game. And if you’re a Buckeye- it will be a good opportunity to scout your potential bowl opponent. I like Georgia to win.

2.) Can Auburn scrape together enough points to stay close with Alabama? Don’t count on the offense to do it. Auburn has been one of the biggest disappointments of the 2008 season and they’re going to need turnovers, short fields, and points from the defense to stay close. Don’t expect it to happen though- I like ‘Bama big at home.

3.) Can Florida State re-ignite former glory to beat their rival? If they’re going to, they’ll need an inspired performance from the defense. FSU has shown glimpses this year of the kind of dominating defense they used to have, and there have also been sparks on offense. They’re getting quality yards on the ground from running backs Antone Smith and Jermaine Thomas. The key will be a mistake-free game from QB Christian Ponder. In Florida State’s three losses, Ponder has thrown seven interceptions, vs. only six the other eight games.

Because this game is in Tallahassee, I like Florida State to cover (15.5) but lose to the unstoppable force that is the Gators right now.

4.) Will Baylor take advantage of the beaten ego that is Texas Tech? Not bloody likely. Mike Leach doesn’t seem to be the mopey type of coach that loses rebound games. Baylor is decent but I like Texas Tech to rebound nicely.

5.) Will Oregon State clinch the Rose Bowl berth with a win at home over Oregon tonight? The Buckeyes are pulling for Oregon big- a win by the Ducks gets Ohio State into the BCS. I like Oregon to win because of a quality rushing attack and no Jacquizz Rogers for Oregon State. Plus two Pac-Ten teams in the BCS sounds filthy.

6.) Will Oklahoma clinch their spot in the Big XII title game vs. Oklahoma State? Oklahoma was very emotional in dominating Texas Tech at home last week. They’re going to be challenged to be up emotionally once again on the road against a very good Okie State team. The Cowboys are the forgotten team in the Big XII South this year, and will be looking to finish their regular season off on a high note. It’s awfully hard to pick against Oklahoma after watching them last week, but I’m hopeful Oklahoma State can keep it close.

7.)
Will Notre Dame cover the 29 point spread against USC? Not win, just cover the spread. They’ll only cover the spread if they can hold USC to 28, because I don’t think they’re going to score on USC. I like USC big, like 40+ big.

You’re welcome.

Forget Socialism, Let’s Go Straight to Communism

October 29th, 2008 by Red Renee

In addition to proposing a redistribution of wealth of epic proportions, apparently Barack Obama wants to control the media as well. Forget a socialist utopia, how about a communist utopia.

If you happen to tune your television at 8pm tonight to NBC, CBS, Fox, MSNBC (shocking), Univision, BET, or something called TV One, you’ll have the pleasure of watching a 30-minute infomercial from Barack Obama. Obama will no doubt wow the gushy left/alleged independents with various flavors of prose, cleverly veiled attacks, and promises of shortening the school year and putting a jukebox in the cafeteria (works in high school government elections). Unless he is selling Shamwows or a Ronco product at the end, I won’t be participating in the “march to history”. I am hoping though that they’ve change his tag line to “Change…you can’t easily quantify or empirically support”

This is political debauchery of grotesque proportions. Infomercials aren’t new of course, Ross Perot used them extensively in his bid for the White House in 1992. But Perot was an unknown; Obama already has the entire mainstream media in his pocket and all of Hollywood stumping for him. Even Secretary-of-States-for-hire (I’m looking at you Colin Powell) are rockin’ the vote.

No, this is a display of the type of arrogance possessed by the Democrats today, an almost god-like attitude that they can make it rain, and will if they think it’s best for the country. It’s just the start of course, once Obama is elected and the Dems have an even greater stranglehold on Congress, who knows where the Socialist machine will take us. I’m just hopeful when Obama and his caucus inform me of what job I can have and what house I can live in, it’s satisfactory to me and my family. Praise be to Barack. The left can’t all get the credit- George Bush has to accept his share. He went into the White House a folksy conservative Republican and is leaving a shamed socially conservative Democrat

On news that total political ad spending nationwide will surpass $2 billion dollars this year, and news that Obama will break George Bush’s former spending mark of $188 million, I have to ask the question- how many more of you need evidence that our government is out of control and not enough of them are truly interested in making meaningful change (ie. putting most of them out of a job). And what hope is there of real change with political spending as far out of control as it is. How could a third party even establish themselves without the billions of dollars in the bank that the Republicans and Democrats have?

And how about the continued double standard that apparently is perfectly fine with most voters. If it were McCain that changed his mind about campaign spending and was blitzing television like Barack is, there would be shrieks of the Republicans trying to buy the election.

Also can you imagine if a Republican couple hung an effigy of Barack Obama on the front of their house like a gay West Hollywood couple did of Sarah Palin?
Palin Effigy
AP photo - Ric Francis

I can’t think of a more disgusting image that I’ve seen recently. At least ultra left-winger Keith Olbermann spoke about the effigy saying “This is not the spirit of Halloween, sir. It is the spirit of violence.” And that’s the last place I would have thought to look for some rationality. But thanks Keith, and try to control yourself tonight while declaring the Obama infomercial a ripping success.

You’re welcome.

Straight Cash Homey

April 24th, 2008 by Red Renee

Money

According to a Los Angeles Times article, actor Roy Scheider (of Jaws- “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” fame) made a $50 donation (sounds like he needed a bigger nest egg) to Barack Obama’s campaign on March 10th. The trouble is, Scheider died one month before his donation on February 10th. Hmmmm….unless heaven (or hell) has internet connectivity or a Western Union, I’m pretty sure that’s an illegal campaign donation.

The Obama campaign claims the donation was on a “monthly credit card donation” and it will be halted this month. Suuuuuurrrrrre…we believe you. All on the up and up. Plenty plausible that a celebrity would be on a $50 a month installment plan. Riiiiiiiiight.

Just in case the Obama campaign needs some other dead celebs to make donations, we suggest going to the “Dead People Server” which is an online obituary for celebrities. May we suggest Kurt Vonnegut, Boris Yeltsin, Liz Claiborne, or Phil Rizzuto- all who died last year.

It’s a Complete Catastrophe

April 17th, 2008 by Red Renee

Ahhhh….so many clips to choose from. “This one goes to 11″. “It’s a Mach”. “David, Smell the Glove is here. Hello Janine”. “The sustain. Listen to it.” Spinal Tap was on MHD last night so in honor of that, and in honor of Friday, here are some of the best scenes of the movie. (NSFW)

Idiot Country

October 23rd, 2007 by Red Renee

I want to tell you about a special place. A place where paid journalists can make sweeping generalizations with little or no factual support. A place where logic and reason aren’t welcome but close-mindedness ignorance are welcome neighbors. That place my friends is Idiot Country. The newest resident in Idiot Country is Foxsports.com senior writer Don Borst.

Among many gems in Don Borst’s article today are the following: “…as things stand, it sure looks like we’re destined to watch a repeat of last season’s BCS championship game- top-ranked Ohio State getting blown out by a much more complete team.” “…put them (Ohio State) in New Orleans on Jan. 7 against a second-ranked team like LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, or USC, and we’d have another ugly tilt along the lines of last year’s 41-14 drubbing of the Buckeyes by Florida.” “…OSU’s four remaining opponents currently are 23-9, but those records are just as hopelessly padded by the soft non-league schedules Big Ten teams played this year.”

That’s more generalities than I thought could fit into three articles, let alone one. Unfortunately, without a playoff in D-I, we’re going to continue to be subjected to unsubstantiated reckless commentary from the likes of Don Borst and many others. And as angry as his comments make me, and as easy as it would be to quickly use reason to shoot holes in most of his arguments, I’m not going to provide him the courtesy of such a response.

Let’s take a few steps back and look at what we know and we don’t know after 8 weeks of college football. Let’s also keep in mind that we don’t really know how good opponents are until we’re at the end of the season and we have the ability to look retrospectively at the entire body of work. All the games have not been played yet, and when they have, the schedules will have somewhat evened themselves out:

Ohio State (8-0)- Strength of schedule is low (Sagarin # 71) but they’ve performed admirably against that schedule with a 26-point average margin of victory and no major statistical weaknesses to be exploited by future opponents (turnover margin is still a concern though- 60th in the country). By win-loss record, Ohio State’s remaining schedule is the 4th most difficult in the country. We’ll find out how good Ohio State is.

Boston College (7-0)- Strength of schedule is going to get much tougher for the Eagles as well. Their previous opponents have a 21-30 record while their future opponents have a record of 21-12. Why get worked up now about BC being # 2? We’ll find out how good they are. Statistically, BC’s 105th ranked pass defense is a potential weakness.

LSU (7-1)- Brutally tough schedule to this point (Sagarin S.O.S. at # 10). It turns out that LSU’s schedule has been front-loaded and they’ve done well only losing once in triple-overtime on the road. Their future schedule is easier than Ohio State’s previous schedule has been. The combined record of LSU’s future opponents is 11-16 which makes for the 89th most difficult remaining schedule (not counting the SEC Championship). We’ll find out if LSU can stay disciplined and win the games they’re supposed to down the stretch like Ohio State and Boston College have to this point.

Arizona State (7-0)- Strength of schedule is low (Sagarin # 60). They’ve performed admirably as well with a 5-2 record against the spread, a 23-point average margin of victory, and no glaring statistical weaknesses. The meat of the schedule is still to come with remaining opponents combined record at 23-12 (good for 17th most difficult). We will find out how good Arizona State is.

Oregon (6-1)- Current strength of schedule is above average (Sagarin # 26). The remaining schedule is going to be a little tougher with remaining opponents holding a combined 22-12 record (good for 20th most difficult). Pass defense is potentially a concern, currently ranked at # 89.

Oklahoma (7-1) Oklahoma is being given a complete pass on their current strength of schedule. By Sagarin ratings, OU’s strength of schedule is 3rd worst in the BCS top 15 at # 83. They have a loss on the record, a 4-4 against the spread, yet are # 4 in both major polls and # 14 in the computer average. We don’t really know how good Oklahoma is and yet Don Borst is certain that OU would blow out Ohio State. Not really sure how he came to that conclusion other than likelihood that he’s a moron. The schedule gets tougher for OU with future opponents’ combined record of 16-12 (good for 42nd toughest remaining schedule). Depending on how the Sooners play down the stretch, I’m not sure we’ll know how good they really are.

West Virginia (6-1)- Current S.O.S. is average at # 56. Future schedule gets a little tougher at # 38 (combined opponent record of 19-13). Passing offense is an alarming 103rd in the country, which means that if you can shut down the running of Slaton and White, you can beat the Mountaineers. We’ll find out how good West Virginia is.

Virginia Tech (6-1)- Current S.O.S. is average at # 54. Future schedule gets much tougher at # 6 (combined opponent record of 26-10). The offense is a mess at Virginia Tech- 101st ranked pass offense and 90th ranked rush offense. We’ll find out how good Virginia Tech is.

Kansas (7-0)- Current S.O.S is nearly the easiest in D-I, ranked # 117. They’ve performed as expected against that slate with no statistical weaknesses and 6-0 against the spread (all with a grain of salt based on that S.O.S.). The future schedule gets much tougher for them with future opponents’ combined record of 19-16, good for 48th toughest schedule. I’m not sure we’ll find out how good Kansas is.

South Florida (6-1)- Current S.O.S. has been very difficult, 8th toughest according to Sagarin. South Florida has come through that stretch with one loss and a few statistical areas of concern. The schedule gets markedly easier with remaining opponents at 17-17 (good for 59th toughest remaining schedule).

You’re welcome.

BCS Apocalypse Now

October 16th, 2007 by Red Renee

Trying to figure out college football this year is like one of those little snow globes- everything is constantly being shaken up and you’re always wondering how the hell they got those tiny little buildings in without any of the water escaping (ok, maybe I’m the only one that wonders that). Chaos is the name of the game this year and the underdogs know the secret formula.

There’s a lot of traffic on the internets and radio about who should be # 1, who shouldn’t be # 1, and not enough traffic about what I want to know- how in the world did Doug Flutie’s head get so close to a cotton candy machine and why did the cotton candy turn dark brown?

Most of the discussion and commentary is nothing but subjective nonsense. Any blowhard with an audience can take a single fact and argue nearly any point ad infinitum. Like the people that are shouting that Ohio State doesn’t deserve to be # 1 because they haven’t been tested yet. Or the people arguing that South Florida shouldn’t be # 2 because the history of their program doesn’t go back to the leather helmet days. Or the people arguing that LSU should still be # 1 because they’re the most talented team in the country.

Well, this blowhard is going to give you the facts and the data and let you make up your own mind. And do so informed. I’ll save my opinions for the Ocho, which will come out later on Wednesday.

Regarding whether or not the most talent wins the national championship each year, that argument should never, ever hold water. Coaching, chemistry and preparation are all more relevant to outcomes in college football than talent- the upsets seen this year fully support this fact.

Regarding South Florida and their short history, the length that a program has been around has absolutely nothing to do with how good this year’s vintage of that team is. It’s absurd that anyone would bring that up in any other reference other than anecdotally.

Now let’s talk about “being tested” and “quality wins”. Using Sagarin strength of schedule, South Florida has had the most challenging road amongst the unbeatens (# 31), followed by Arizona State (# 54), Ohio State (# 72), Boston College (# 79), and Kansas (#126). Amongst the one-loss teams, LSU has had the toughest road (# 13), followed by Oregon (# 27), California (# 28), Kentucky (# 34), South Carolina (# 36), West Virginia (# 39), Virginia Tech (# 62), Oklahoma (# 66), and USC (# 87).

The problem with strength of schedule is while it speaks to a mathematical calculation of all games played, it doesn’t really consider point in time of “being tested”. To get to that, we’ve got to consider a few other things.

In order to be a top 5 team, you have to win all your games at home and win all or most of your games on the road. Let’s take a look at who’s “been tested” on the road and how they fared. For the purposes of defining a quality win on the road, the team must be in the Sagarin top 30 or BCS top 25, and I will list the Sagarin ranking, the BCS ranking, and the record of the opponent.

First, LSU- LSU has only played one quality opponent on the road, a 6-1 Kentucky team (Sagarin # 9, BCS # 7), and they lost that game. They played Florida which is obviously a quality win, but it was at home and top 5 teams are expected to win at home.

Ohio State has one quality win on the road, a 5-2 Purdue team (Sagarin # 29, BCS unranked), and that game was played at night.

South Florida has one quality win on the road over a 5-2 Auburn team (Sagarin # 15, BCS # 17), that game was also played at night.

Boston College does not have a quality win on the road. They beat a 4-3 Georgia Tech team at night but GT is Sagarin # 32 and BCS unranked.

Oklahoma has a quality road win over 5-2 Texas (Sagarin # 21, BCS # 22).

South Carolina’s quality road win is over 5-2 Georgia at night (Sagarin # 26, BCS # 20).

Kentucky does not have a quality road win, the only quality team they played on the road was South Carolina and they lost that game.

Arizona State does not have a quality road win. In fact, Arizona State has had only two road games, a 38 point win over Stanford and a 3-point win over Washington State.

West Virginia does not have a quality road win. The beat a 4-2 Maryland team on the road but the Terps are Sagarin # 40. West Virginia played a quality opponent on the road in South Florida but they lost that game.

Oregon has a quality win on the road over 5-2 Michigan (Sagarin # 25, BCS # 25). Feel free to debate amongst yourselves as to whether or not that was a quality win.

Had enough yet? Almost finished.

Virginia Tech does not have a quality road win. They beat a 4-2 Clemson team on the road, but Clemson is Sagarin # 47 and unranked in the BCS.

Cal has the best quality road win beating 5-1 Oregon (Sagarin # 8, BCS # 10).

Kansas has played only one road game and it was a quality win over 4-2 Kansas State (Sagarin # 14).

USC does not have a quality road win. Their only marquee road game was played against a 4-3 Nebraska team which is Sagarin # 58- far from quality.

Finally, Florida has played only one quality team on the road- LSU- and they lost that game.

So after all that (and that’s a lot), who’s really “been tested”? Cal has. LSU was…and they failed. Florida was tested too and they failed. Ohio State, South Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Oregon, and Kansas have all been tested to some extent. Boston College, Kentucky, Arizona State, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and USC have not been tested on the road yet.

Can you really draw any concrete conclusions on where anyone stands right now? No. Not really. All you can do is wait until the end of the year and hope that voters and the computers get it right. And that’s a pretty sad way to determine who truly is the best team in the country.

You’re welcome.

The Ocho - Inaugural Edition

October 5th, 2007 by Red Renee

Today is the official launch of the first Red Renee Top 8 college football poll- the Ocho if you will. Why ocho? Because we want to see an 8-team playoff at the end of the season and we firmly believe in the “Field of Dreams” theory- if we write it, it will happen. Before the unveiling, a few qualifiers and legal disclaimers…

As I’ve stated previously, and as evidenced below, undefeated teams aren’t automatically placed ahead of one-loss teams. I start with Sagarin rankings and strength of schedule calculations and then, based on everything I’ve seen from all the teams so far, I ask myself “if team “A” were to play team “B” at a neutral or quasi-neutral site, who would win”? I also down-grade teams significantly if they’re one-dimensional on offense. Against a quality team, one-dimensional offenses always lose. Not a very scientific process but better than having my S.I.D. or Graduate Assistant fill out the ballot for me. (note to self….get a Graduate Assistant).

So without further ado, and just in time for the weekend, here’s the Ocho:

1.) USC (4-0) Still the most complete team top to bottom. Giving up 31 points to Nebraska and 24 points to Washington worry me and might cause me to change my mind next week.

2.) LSU (5-0) Got to be honest- if anyone other than Les Miles was coaching this team, they’d be my # 1. I do think they’re going to beat Florida this weekend though.

3.) Cal (5-0) Giving up 24 points a game on defense is a concern but I still think they would probably beat everyone I’ve got below ‘em. The win at Autzen Stadium last week scored big points with me.

4.) Oregon (4-1) Call me a Pac-10 homer but # 21 strength of schedule and a well-balanced offense are the reasons why I love the Ducks. Their defense has some weaknesses but they’ve got plenty of offensive firepower to win a shootout.

5.) Oklahoma (4-1) I’m not sold on Oklahoma- especially after their look-ahead loss at Colorado last week. I think they’re going to beat Texas this week and handle the rest of the Big 12 really well….which is why I see them slowly rising over the next few weeks anyways….so why not just put them here now? It’s a reach, I know. Head-to-head, I think they beat 6, 7, and 8 below.

6.) Ohio State (5-0) This is a young team. Turnovers and some kicking game issues concern me. I think they’re still a year away from a return trip to the NC and at this point, 1-5 would all beat them at a neutral site. A win this weekend at night at 5-0 Purdue will show me a lot. A loss will put them out of the Ocho and it will take a beat down of Penn State and Wisconsin to get back in.

7.) South Carolina (4-1) Wins at Georgia and home against Kentucky. Solid (not spectacular) on offense and defense. No shame in the 28-16 loss at LSU. This is a good football team and they should continue to roll until they meet up with Florida on November 10th- this outcome will define whether this is a good season or a great season for the Gamecocks.

8.) South Florida (4-0) I bounced this around back and forth in my head trying to justify keeping South Florida out of the Ocho and I just can’t. # 30 strength of schedule legitimizes that 4-0 record. I love the win at Auburn and I like the win over West Virginia at home. I bumped them down from # 6 (where they are in the AP poll) because they don’t have a running game. This will cost them a game at some point this season, likely at Rutgers in a few weeks.

If you disagree, great. Tell me about it. I watch a lot of college football though so I’m pretty sure you’re wrong.

You’re welcome.

Somebody Call the Police, My Weed is Missing

March 10th, 2007 by Red Renee

Dateline: Wellington, New Zealand. According to an AP report, a New Zealand woman called the police sobbing that her pot plants had been stolen. Someone illegally entered her property and stole the three plants she was growing. And for the fourth time in as many years. I’m no home security expert, but I’m pretty sure she’d have fewer incidents of stolen pot if she wasn’t so high.

Not surprisingly, the police found themselves holding in their laughter as the “victim” recounted the story. She said, “I am a good person. I am sick of these low-lifes stealing my things”.

The woman was not charged with anything but was warned that her horticultural pursuits may get her into trouble in the future. My guess is she’ll probably try to take vigilante law into her own hands and set some sort of weed booby-trap to catch the perps. Hopefully, she’ll tell the police about that story also.

Decaying American Morals: The Victim Culture and Attorneys

February 20th, 2007 by Red Renee

Dateline: East Fishkill, NY

James Pacenza was fired back in 2003 from IBM for allegedly using a work computer to visit sex-related internet chat rooms on multiple occasions. According to IBM, Pascenza, 55 at the time, was terminated for “violating IBM’s business conduct guidelines” and “misuse of IBM property”. Pacenza fired back with a lawsuit claiming that he’s been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder since he served in Vietnam in the late 60’s (yep, that Vietnam- almost 40 years ago).

Pacenza and his attorney are also claiming shelter under the Americans with Disabilities Act stating that Mr. Pacenza is an internet addict. I’m a little fuzzy on the chronology of a.) the Vietnam War, b.) when Al Gore invented the internet, and c.) when exactly the plaintiff became addicted to the aforementioned internet. Maybe the attorneys can help clear that timing up in court. In filed court papers, Mr. P also said “I was tempting myself to perhaps become involved in some titillating conversation”. At work. The nerve of IBM to fire that guy.

http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061219/BUSINESS01/612190318/1012

Wait, it gets better. At the time of his termination, the Plaintiff was receiving approximately $65,000 a year. Pacenza is suing IBM for $5 million. That’s 76.9 years of salary, unadjusted for inflation. Apparently the internet addiction would have enabled Mr. Pacenza to work until the age of 132.

Mr. Pacenza- take your internet and go home. You are not a victim- you are part of the problem. You’ve joined the hundreds of thousands of people who spin reality through their own sense of entitlement. Most Americans would be delighted to get $65,000 a year to look at silicon wafers all day. You should have been using the internet to research better ways to build silicon chips, or enjoy your retirement- titillate yourself with that.

You’re welcome.

Some People Should Not Be Allowed To Have Technology

February 18th, 2007 by Red Renee

Special Guest Contributor Mark O. checks in with his ode to technology- first a nod to the technologically disadvantaged and second, a Norwegian video spoofing how some folks approach a computer. Enjoy!

We all know them. They’re our mothers and fathers, our aunts and uncles, our neighbors and friends. They are The People that Technology Left Behind. Think of it like that old Saturday morning show The Land of the Lost. You know the one…the Marshall family (Rick, Will and Holly) get lost on a rafting trip when an earthquake dumps them over a waterfall into The Land of the Lost. There they encountered dinosaurs they named Dopey and Alice and a little orphaned monkey-boy named Cha-Ka who quickly joined the family.

But I digress. Imagine all of our People that Technology Left Behind (PtTLB’s for short) are just like Cha-Ka, trapped in a world where the clicker is really a clicker, where UHF and VHF channels mean something, and where a record isn’t just something that Guinness keeps track of. These people should be pitied, but in some cases they bring it on themselves. Really now, who can blame your 70+ year old grandfather for not understanding an iPod? Or your sweet old auntie who doesn’t even have a cordless phone, let alone understand net-to-phone? These age-challenged folks have been through plenty of change in their lives (e.g. a World War, color TV, integrated schools) so just because they can’t hang with today’s techno-babble we should give them a break.

No, the PtTLB’s that piss me off are the ones who should know better. Those who remember Frogger, Zaxxon and the Mario Brothers before they got their own game but still refuse to embrace today’s electronic wizardry.

Take my friend and co-worker who just bought a new portable GPS for her car. She’s angry because “Jill” (so named because of the electronic voice she chose for it) refuses to learn her preferences for driving routes. Apparently “Jill” wants her to go one way when my friend KNOWS that another route is better. There’s obviously a fundamental problem here…if my friend already knows the route, then why is she using the damn GPS in the first place?

Or how about my buddy that just bought a new 6.1 megapixel digital camera with a 1 GB memory card? He brought it to a party the other day and after every picture he takes you have to wait while he reviews it in the camera and decides if the shot came out right. If not he deletes it (something he’s not very sure how to do yet) and then has to have everyone recreate the spontaneous moment that just passed so he can shoot it again? He simply can’t understand that with the capacity for over 500 shots he can just shoot and shoot and shoot and sort out the pictures later on his computer. And don’t even get me started on his inability to comprehend the pre-flash that happens with the red-eye reduction feature…

And my personal favorite PtTLB, the wife of a friend who, upon seeing him pause a live football game with his TIVO so he could go take a leak and get a beer asked, “But how does it get everyone at the stadium to wait for you?” Really, she did.

I give up.

Tips to make the world a better place

November 29th, 2006 by Red Renee

Dropped Cell Call Protocol

Here’s the scene: You’re talking on your cell phone and your call drops. Whether you’re driving through an underpass, passing by some sort of butte, or just minding your own business. It doesn’t matter if the person you’re talking to is also on a cell phone, though that doesn’t help. You quickly try to re-dial the person you were chatting with but of course they’re doing the same thing. You both get multiple busy signals. And then the cursing starts…

Well, never fear. We here at redrenee.com have a simple solution to this constant problem. It’s a simple rule to live by. No matter whether it’s a cell-to-cell or cell-to-land call, the person that initiates the call does the call back. If you were on the receiving end, sit on your hands and wait for the other party to call you back. Do this and you’ll save your sanity, save damage to your cell phone (by not throwing it out the window), and make the world a better place.

You’re welcome.
